SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2 yd Fabric A (sports fabric and piping)_x000B_1/2 yd Fabric B (canvas)_x000B_2 1/4 yd Interfacing 1 (lightweight fusible interfacing) -2/3 yd Interfacing 2 (1⁄8" Headliner foam fabric)_x000B_3/4 yd Interfacing 3 (Sew-in extra firm craft weight) -9" interior zipper_x000B_32" Double-pull handbag zipper for exterior_x000B_2 1/4 yds of 3/16" cord for piping

DIRECTIONS:

  1. 1/2" seam allowance are included, unless otherwise indicated.
  2. Pin INTERFACING #2 to wrong side of SIDE 11, SIDE 12, and SIDE A and SIDE B #13 sections, having edges even; baste.
  3. Fuse INTERFACING #1 to wrong side of side LINING 11, side LINING 12, top and bottom LINING 13, HANDLE 14, UPPER SECTION 15, LOWER SECTION 16, and TAB 17, following manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Turn seam allowance on ends of Handle 14 to inside; press. 4. Turn long edges of handle to inside along outer fold line; press.
  5. Fold handle along remaining fold line, having wrong sides together; press. Stitch close to ends and long edges. Set aside.
  6. Fold straight long edge of OUTER PATTERN FABRIC OVERLAY to the wrong side by 1/4"; press. Place wrong side of OUTER PATTERN FABRIC OVERLAY on top of right side of SIDE A, PIECE 13, having rounded corners and top edge even. Top stitch along folded edge. Baste remaining edges. Repeat for OUTER PATTERN FABRIC OVERLAY and SIDE B, PIECE 13.
  7. To make piping, center cord on wrong side of PIPING 19, having ends even. Fold piping over cord, having raw edges even. Using a zipper foot, stitch close to cord.
  8. Pin one piping to SIDE A, placing ridge of cord slightly inside seam allowance, overlapping ends 1/2". To join ends, remove a few stitches from each end of piping; open out to expose cords. Trim ends of cord until they meet. Whipstitch cords together.
  9. Turn under raw edge on one end of piping; lap remaining end. Re-cover cord with piping; baste, using a zipper foot. Baste remaining piping section to SIDE B in same manner.
  10. To shorten interior zipper, whipstitch across zipper teeth 3/4" above lower zipper stop. Whipstitch across upper end of zipper. Trim upper and lower end of zipper 1/2" from zipper stop.
  11. Cut out sections from END 20. Turn 1/4" on one end of each end section to inside; press. Pin end sections to front and back of upper and lower end of zipper, having raw edges even and pressed edges toward center. Move zipper pull away from pressed edges. Baste. Stitch close to pressed edges. Trim upper and lower edges of end sections even with sides of zipper.
  12. Pin zipper, face down over one Upper Section 15, having lower edges even; baste. Pin remaining upper section to upper section with zipper, right sides together. Stitch along lower edge in a 1/4" seam using a zipper foot.
  13. Turn right side out; press. Baste raw edges together. Edge stitch lower edge of upper section. To complete pocket, apply opposite side of zipper with end sections to upper edge of Lower Section 16 in same manner as upper section.
  14. For top lining, pin pocket with zipper, right side up over one top and bottom Lining 3 section, having raw edges even; baste.
  15. Trim your exterior zipper so that it is exactly 28". Whipstitch across zipper teeth at each end to prevent the zipper head from coming off tape.
  16. Pin one end of Tab 17 to lower end of zipper, right sides together. Baste end. Pin one end of tab Lining 17 to lower end of zipper, right sides together. Stitch in a 1/4" seam. Turn right side out; press. Edge stitch tab along seam.
  17. Apply remaining end of tab and tab lining to opposite end of zipper in same manner, creating a zipper ring. Trim long edges of tab even with sides of zipper.
  18. Trim 1/2" from one end of INTERFACING #2 for tab 7. Trim 3⁄8" from long edges. Insert interfacing between tab and lining; baste raw edges together.
  19. Stitch Side 12 together at center back. Stitch side Lining 12 together at center back.
  20. Pin zipper with tab, face down over side section, having lower edges even and placing seam at center of tab. Baste using a zipper foot.
  21. Pin side lining to side over zipper, right sides together and matching seems. Stitch along lower edge in a 1/4" seam. Turn right side out; press. Baste raw edges together.
  22. Topstitch lower edge of side 1⁄8".
  23. Stitch side lining together at center back. Stitch Side 11 together at center back. Apply opposite side of zipper and tab to upper edge of side 11 and side lining 11 in same manner as side 12.
  24. Staystitch upper and lower edges of side sections.
  25. With right sides together, pin top to upper edges of side, placing center back seam at square and center front at large circle and clipping where necessary. Stitch, easing in fullness where necessary. Do not trim seam allowance.
  26. Open zipper. Pin top lining to top, having right sides together. Stitch in place, leaving back edge open 5" for turning. Trim seam allowance to 1/4".
  27. Turn right side out, turning under remaining seam allowance; press. Apply bottom 13 and bottom lining 13 to lower edge of side in same manner as top.
  28. Trim away seam allowance on each INTERFACING #3 (craft wt.) for top and bottom. Insert interfacing into top and bottom. Sew pressed edges over seam. Turn right side out; press.
  29. Center and pin handle from step 5 onto outside of Piece 11. Stitch close to ends. Stitch again, 1/4" away.
