  4. RST sew front sides to back sides, 1/2" SA. Match necks, shoulder curves and bottom corners. Open seams out. Topstitch on either side of seams.
  5. RST sew neck fronts to neck back on sides, 1/2" SA. Open seams out. Topstitch on either side of seams.
  6. Place neck RST with cape neck. Sew 1/4" from raw edges starting and stopping 1" from cape opening. Notch seam. Turn neck to inside cape and topstitch close to fold starting and stopping 1" from ends.
  7. Double fold the front opening edge of cape in 1/2" then in another 1/2" and sew close to fold. For heavy fabric, zig zag raw edges of opening then turn the fabric in 1" and sew on top of the zig zag.
  8. Place raw end of a tie 2" in from front opening of cape flush with the topstitch of the neck, between front opening of cape and inside neck. Angle the front opening edge of neck under and stitch on fold to finish neck front. Repeat for second side.

  12. Measure width of decorative trim. Mark a line parallel to the front opening of the cape, the width of the decorative trim.
  13. Measure and mark a line 3 1/4" over from the first line. Lay 4" fur edge on this line RST with front of cape 1/2" past the bottom edge of cape and extending 1/2" past the shoulder seam. Fur pointing down. The fur trim will be laying toward the shoulder from where it will lay when finished. Sew 1/2" from raw edge. Start at the shoulder seam and sew to the bottom edge. Flip fur over, raw edge will land 1/4" past the decorative trim line. Sew a thin zig zag stitch at edge of fur to secure. Fold in top and bottom edges of fur to match contours of neck and bottom edge. Trim excess fur to reduce bulk. Hand stitch in place. Repeat.
  14. Start decorative trim at neck and finish at bottom edge of opening of cape. Fold under raw edges 1/2". Sew on both edges of trim to secure flush to the opening edge and covering the zig zag edge of fur trim.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Cut fur from the back. Cut only through the backing material to leave the natural length of fur on the front.
  • When all fur is attached to the cape a fine tooth comb may be brushed through the fur to gently pull any lengths of fur caught in seams.
  • Tape the fur where you would like to cut it, this will help with fraying.
