SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
FOR WING CAPE:
  • Kraft Paper
  • Lace Fabric - 1yd
  • Velvet - 1/2yd
  • 25mm Bias Tape Maker
  • 3/4" Black Elastic - 12 inches
  • Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Sewing Clips
  • Iron

FOR HEADPIECE:
  • Pattern Template A and B
  • DIY Full Face Paper Mask
  • Black Felt
  • Black Stretch Velvet - 1/4yd
  • Fabric Glue and Paint Brush
  • Scissors
  • Low-Temp Hot Glue Gun/Glue Gun Sticks
  • Awl (or a Safety Pin)

DIRECTIONS:
WING CAPE:
  1. Trace child's outstretched arms and torso onto Kraft Paper, make marks to indicate the edge of the neck on either side, the wrists, and the waistline.
  2. Draw a gentle curve on the neckline. Draw a curve over the waistline. Draw another curve from the waistline to a center point between the waist and wrist. Draw a last curve connecting the center point to the wrist. Draw a straight line connecting the curve points to the neckline.
  3. Fold Kraft paper in half vertically through the center of the body, set aside one half. With the other half, cut out the three pieces of your wing template. (The halved center piece will be cut on the fold)
  4. Finally, retrace your wing pieces on the excess kraft paper you'd set aside, adding 1" onto each seam edge. (That is, add 1" to every straight edge except for the fold of the center piece and the straight edge that runs the length of the arm.)
  5. These are your wing pieces.
  6. Number your wing pieces and make marks to indicate the fold and seamed edges. Then, use your pattern pieces to cut out one center piece on the fold, and two of each of the remaining wing pieces. Set the cut pieces on top of their corresponding template, to help remember which is which.
  7. Starting with the center piece and working outward, use sewing clips to secure seam edges together. Sew the wing pieces together using the french seam method: First sew the seam with a 1/4" seam allowance, then fold it over so that the raw edge is sandwiched between two outer layers, secure with sewing clips, and sew with 1/2" seam allowance. Repeat for remaining three seams.
  8. Put iron on Low setting. Make bias tape out of the velvet by cutting 2" wide strips on the bias (that is, at a 45-degree angle.) Pull strip through the bias tape maker, ironing as you go.
  9. Measure the length of the neckline, add 22", and cut one bias strip to that length, set aside. For the rest, attach three bias tape pieces together. Place the ends right sides together, 45-degrees angling away from each other, so that they make a V. Sew, trim seam allowance, and press folds back down with iron.
  10. Beginning at the neckline and working around the top and bottom edges, secure the folded bias tape over the raw edge of the lace fabric with sewing clips. Sew about 1/4" from the bias tape edge. Continue all the way around, stopping at the neckline on the other side.
  11. Center remaining bias tape on neckline, with 11" of bias tape hanging off on either side. Fold bias tape over raw edge of lace fabric and sew across as before, stopping about two inches before the end of the bias tape to fold the edge in 1/2" twice (snipping off the corner edges to help it lay flat.) Sew bias tape ends.
  12. Make two circles out of the 3/4" elastic the size of the child's wrist, plus an inch to overlap and sew. Sew together with a zigzag stitch, and sew onto the top end points of the wing cape.

HEADPIECE:
  1. Mark and cut off bottom portion of mask below eye openings, making a V shaped point on the forehead portion between the eye openings. Discard bottom portion of mask. Unknot and set aside the mask's elastic.
  2. Use a paint brush to put a full layer of fabric glue on the front of mask. Place a rectangle of stretch velvet that is slightly larger than the mask over the glue and gently stretch and press into place. Be careful not to press too firmly or the glue will seep through to the front of the fabric. Allow to dry for several hours or overnight.
  3. Once dry, trim the excess fabric around the outside of mask leaving 1/2" of excess to fold over to the back side of the mark. Use a paint brush to apply glue to the back of the mask along the outside edge and fold over excess fabric to complete a finished edge.
  4. Using Pattern A, cut 2 pieces of felt. Using Pattern B, cut 2 pieces and 2 REVERSE pieces of stretch velvet.
  5. Using a paintbrush, apply glue to one side of the felt ears, making sure to reverse one of them. Allow to dry for several hours. Once dry, paint glue around the outer edge of opposite side of ears, except for the bottom edge, and fold over the excess velvet. Allow to dry. Once dry, cover entire frontside of ears with glue and velvet cut form Pattern B. There should be excess overhang of velvet. Allow to fully dry, then carefully cut away the excess velvet from the front of the ears, leaving an overhang along the bottom edge of the backside of the ears.
  6. On the inside of the mask, use hot glue to glue the excess overhang from the backside of the ears. This creates a finished edge and more secure bond of the ears to the mask.
  7. Re-pierce the holes for the elastic using an awl or just a safety pin. Re-knot the elastic.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Keep a damp rag or paper towels handy when gluing to quickly clean up any glue that gets on the front of the velvet.
  • Use Sewing Clips to secure glued mask and ear pieces while they set.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pattern A and B seem to be missing. Either I am blind or there are no templates or pattern attached to this project. I think it would be doable if I had something to start with. Seems like the instructions are ok, but they don’t help much if there isn’t a pattern to go with it. - could be because I’m using an iPad and there is a problem with the page showing correctly.
