- MEASUREMENTS:
- Bag finish size: 20" W x 30".
DIRECTIONS:
NOTE: Use a 1/2" seam allowance. Zig zag stitch to finish edges.- Cut:
- Top - 2 @ 21" W x 23" H, Liner - 2 @ 21" W x 31"
- Bottom - 1 @ 21" W x 17" H
- Attach two grommets, 5" apart, to the top of one top panel (front). On WS mark 5 1/2" down from one 21" edge and 2 1/2" from center for centers of grommets. Fuse interfacing squares centered over marks. Follow manufacturer's instructions to apply grommets.
- RST sew bottom between two tops on 21" edges. Ensure that grommets are on the opposite side from seam between top and bottom. If directional print is used for the top and liner panels set the top of the print away from the bottom panel. Sew and finish the edges. Press seams toward the bottom panel.
- Layer trim over the bottom panel matching the top edge of trim with the seam. Keep the bottom edge of trim facing toward the center of the bottom. Center trim side to side. Topstitch in place.
- Fold the top panels with bottom in half to 30 1/2". Match top corners. Sew both 30 1/2" sides. Trim the bottom corners to reduce bulk. Finish edges. This is the outer bag. Leave inside out. Set aside.
- RST liner panels matching corners. Sew two 31" sides and bottom 21" edge leaving 6" open centered at bottom edge to turn. Trim the bottom corners to reduce bulk. Finish edges. This is the liner bag. Turn right sides out.
- Place liner, right sides out, inside outer bag, wrong sides out. Bags will be right sides together. Match side seams and top edges. Sew around top and finish edges.
- Turn right side out through liner bottom opening. Push out corners of outer bottom with chopstick or dowel.
- Fold back opening edges to match seam. Press. Top stitch close to edge.
- Turn liner to inside of outer bag. Press top seam.
- Top stitch 3 1/2" down and 5 1/2" down from top seam for cord channel.
- Wrap tape around the ends of cord to prevent fray. Thread cord through the channel entering and exiting through the grommets. Do not overlap the cord. Single knot the ends of cord. Fray cord past the knot.
- Gather the top of the bag on the cord to cinch the bag closed. Tie the cord in a bow.
JOANN HACKS:
- Tape a guide to sew the cord channel topstitch. Lay a strip of painter's tape front to back on the bed of the sewing machine 3 1/2" and 5 1/2" to the right of the needle position. Keep the top of the bag in line with the tape while feeding the bag through the machine.
