SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Liquitex Basics Acrylic colors: Titanium White, Raw Sienna, Cerulean Blue Hue, Phthalo Blue, Bright Aqua Green
  • Liquitex Gloss Gel Medium
  • 11"x 14" Canvas (pre-primed)
  • Trowel-shaped palette knife
  • Palette paper
  • Plastic or paper to protect surface (optional)
  • Gloves (Optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Protect your work surface with paper or plastic (recommended) and assemble supplies & tools.
  2. Scoop out Gel Medium into 5 separate piles on the palette paper with the following quantities:
    • Pile 1: 1 1/2 Tablespoons
    • Pile 2: 1 1/2 Tablespoons
    • Pile 3: 1 1/2 Tablespoons
    • Pile 4: 1 1/2 Tablespoons
    • Pile 5: 1/4 Cup
  3. Add paint colors to above Gel Medium Piles per below and MIX:
  4. Add to Gel Pile 1: Pea size dot Raw Sienna, 1/2 teaspoon Titanium White = TAN COLOR
  5. Add to Gel Pile 2: Pea size dot Phthalo Blue, 1/2 teaspoon Titanium White = BLUE WATER COLOR
  6. Add to Gel Pile 3: 1 teaspoon Bright Aqua Green, 1/2 teaspoon Titanium White = AQUA WATER COLOR
  7. Add to Gel Pile 4: Pea size dot Cerulean Blue Hue, 1/2 teaspoon Titanium White = SKY COLOR
  8. Add to Gel Pile 5: 1 Tablespoon Titanium White = WHITE COLOR
  9. Starting with the "sand" at the bottom, use the palette knife to drag the TAN COLOR across the bottom of the canvas, about 2 1/2" high.
  10. Next, take some of the WHITE COLOR and feather it into the TAN COLOR directly on the canvas to create a subtle transition.
  11. Using the WHITE COLOR, drag on a small layer above the previous "transition" layer to show the edge of the foamy water.
  12. Above the "foamy" layer, add dots of the BLUE WATER COLOR and WHITE COLOR across the width of the canvas, in about a 3" high section and gently mix together the darker "water" layer. Subtly blend the strokes into the lower "foamy" layer.
  13. Above the darker "water" layer, add dots of the AQUA WATER COLOR and WHITE COLOR across the width of the canvas, in about a 3" high section and gently mix together the lighter "water" layer. Subtly blend the strokes into the lower darker "water" layer.
  14. Above the lighter "water" layer, add dots of the SKY COLOR and WHITE COLOR across the width of the canvas, in the remaining section and gently mix together the "sky" layer.
  15. Add additional WHITE COLOR into the "sky" layer as needed to differentiate the blue hue from the "water" layers.
  16. Using the WHITE COLOR, dollop a few clouds into the "sky" layer.
  17. Review the piece and adjust with more color strokes or more WHITE COLOR as needed to unify the painting.
  18. Allow to dry. Will be dry to the touch in several hours and dry enough to ship in about 3 days.

JOANN HACKS:
