SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Fimo Leather Effect Modelling Clay
  • Clay rolling pin
  • Leather cord
  • Parchment paper
  • Scissors
  • Pattern template

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Roll the clay into a thin sheet. To create a speckled effect, tear off small bits of other colors and place on the clay before rolling to its final thickness.
  2. Pick up the dish and pull the edges slightly to achieve the leather look.
  3. Place the dish on a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Bake it in the oven at 265 degrees F, for 30 minutes.
  4. Allow to cool.
  5. To find the downloadable pattern click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  6. Trace the pattern template onto the dish. Cut out the shape.
  7. Fold the dish into shape. Thread a piece of leather cord through the holes and tie on either side of the dish. Trim any excess cord.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun, free project I have never worked with this clay project before. I added cracked pepper to the clay before baking, and I used an old shoelace to tie it. I love how it turned out!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Practice makes perfect Tried the March take home craft. I’m feeling like I could do this better second time around. Will certainly purchase more supplies to experiment with this new to me crafting medium. Next time I need to roll out more.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from very disappointing The "Kit" didn't include the pattern (why not?- If you are going to provide a kit, make it complete. Not everyone has access to internet or printer) The upside was that since I had to look up the pattern, I also got to read the reviews and get better directions. Thank you to other Joann customers!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from As am art teacher, this was a BIG fail! If you’re going to advertise that “all you need is included” you need to include all the things a person needs to do the project! All that was included was a slab of hideous pink colored fimo clay and a piece of twine. I understand that this was a FREE project and I am doing my best to show grace with this in mind, but this isn’t a great public relations thing if it doesn’t include all the things needed and it is never going to look like the one pictured here. It’s better offer various different project sheets, let the customer decide which one they want to make and offer 20% off the supplies needed to accomplish the project. OR, put a pre-cut piece of faux leather, vinyl, even fun foam in the bag. I must admit I am going to be VERY leary of the free projects bags on the table in the future.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from so-so The Fimo Clay is hard to work with. The instructions have you roll out the clay, bake it then cut. It would have gone much easier to roll, cut then bake. Doing it this way, you can pull a softer more leather like edge. It also has you waiting for the clay to cool. It really should say let it cool enough to handle as it was hard to fold fully cooled. I was able to fold it after I warmed it up a bit. Threading the cord through the holes is easier with a very sharp needle. I do not know what the kits included for cording, but mine had elastic cord. It does not work well, so I plan on switching it out for twine or leather cording, After working with Fimo for this project, I know I will not do any more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun Project The YCDI Leather clay trinket dish is a fun little project. The free supplies allowed me to make it exactly like the picture shown on the project sheet that was included free. It showed a pinkish color (southwestern) instead of the gray project shown here. Yes, I had to use my own scissors and rolling pin. I had to print the template from this website. That would be the only downside. Thanks for the fun project trying my hand at using Fimo Leather effect modeling clay.
