Mickey & Friends Backpack

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Mickey & Friends Gray Ground Print Fabric
  • Mickey & Friends White Ground Print Fabric
  • Mickey & Friends Block Print Fabric
  • Solid yellow cotton
  • Solid red cotton
  • Solid white cotton
  • Heavyweight iron-on interfacing
  • Fabric shears
  • Coordinating thread
  • 2 sew-on magnetic snaps
  • 2 metal strap sliders

DIRECTIONS:

NOTES: all seam allowances are 1/2" unless otherwise noted
  1. Cut strips of yellow cotton 2 1/8" wide for binding.
  2. Front, Back, & Lining: Cut two pieces 14" wide x 12" tall of the block fabric & of white lining.
  3. Top Flap: Cut one piece each 14" wide x 8" tall of the block fabric & white lining.
  4. Sides: Cut four pieces 4.5" wide x 12" tall of the gray ground fabric.
  5. Bottom: Cut two pieces 14" wide x 4 1/2" tall of the gray ground fabric.
  6. Front Pocket Flap: Cut two pieces 10 1/2" wide x 5" tall of the white ground fabric.
  7. Front Pocket: Cut two pieces 10 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" tall of the white ground fabric.
  8. Side Front Pocket: Cut four pieces 2 1/2" wide x 12" tall of the white ground fabric.
  9. Top Handle: Cut one piece 12"x 4" of the red solid fabric.
  10. Straps: Cut two 3"x 30" of the red solid fabric.
  11. Strap Loops: Cut one piece 1 1/2"x 5" of the red solid fabric.
  12. Interface all pieces except lining & loops.
  13. Sew flap pieces together facing each other, around the side & bottom edges. Clip bottom corners off and flip right side out. Iron.
  14. Center the top of the pocket flap face down, on the face up outer back piece. Top with back lining piece. Sew top edge. Flip right side out & topstitch 1/4" from top. Baste (large stitch length) around sides & bottoms, lining up outer & lining.
  15. Sew pocket flap pieces together around the side & bottom edges. Clip bottom corners off and flip right side out. Iron
  16. Sew the front pocket pieces together, facing each other, at the top edge. Flip right side & topstitch 1/4" from top.
  17. Baste (large stitch length) around sides & bottoms, lining up outer & lining.
  18. Sew two of the front pocket sides together on the short side. Repeat with other two pieces.
  19. Taking one of the joined side pieces. Line up the seam with the center bottom of the pocket. Pin along the bottom. Snip almost 1/2" in at the corners, on the side piece so you can turn the corner keeping a 1/2" seam allowance. Sew piece on. The top of the side should overlap the front piece by 1/2".
  20. Take other side piece and sew in the same way to the other side of the pocket.
  21. Sew top of the side pieces together (facing each other still) to make the top even with the front. Flip right side out then top stitch edge to line up with stitching on front.
  22. Top stitch the edge around the front pocket to create a crisp finish.
  23. Center the front pocket on the bag front 1 1/2" up from bottom with pocket turned under 1/2" at bottom. Continue to turn under seam allowance and pin on across the bottom and up the sides. Top stitch on.
  24. Lay Pocket Flap with raw edge, lined up 1" above pocket. Sew 1/4" from bottom edge. Flip the flap downward & top stitch 1/4" along the fold line.
  25. Sew the front outer & lining together, facing each other, at the top edge. Flip right side & topstitch 1/4" from top. Baste (large stitch length) around sides & bottoms, lining up outer & lining.
  26. Sew outer two bag side pieces to bottom on the short sides. Repeat with side/bottom lining.
  27. Facing each other sew the short sides of the lining and outer together. Flip right side out and top stitch 1/4" in along short edges.
  28. Take the newly joined side & bottom strip. Line up along the edges of the inside of the front of the bag. This will make your seam allowance be on the outside of the bag. Pin along the edges. Snip almost ½" in at the corners, on the side seam allowance so you can turn the corner keeping a 1/2" seam allowance. Sew it on.
  29. Repeat step 27 sewing the other side of the side/bottom to the back piece.
  30. Time to prep the straps, handle and strap loops. Press the long sides of the loop piece in 1/4" then in half. Sew closed, then cut in half.
  31. Sew along the long edges of the strap pieces then turn right side out & press. Top stitch along the sewn edge.
  32. Sew the long edge of the handle and flip right side out. Top stitch along long edges.
  33. Where the top flap is inserted into the back, line the handle up along the sewn edge 6" apart. Sew 1/4" from raw edges facing inward.
  34. Cover the stitch line & raw edge with the body of the handle & top stitch 1/4" in from folded edges.
  35. Sew the top of the straps (seam allowance pointing down towards the body of the bag) onto the back body of the bag right below the edges of the handle.
  36. Flip straps down to cover seam allowance then top stitch 1/4" below fold. Sew another line right below.
  37. Put the strap sliders on the bottom of the straps as the packaging instructs.
  38. Decide where you want the bottom of the straps to attach to the bottom of the bag. Tack one end of the strap loop along the seam allowance where the bottom is attached & where you decided the strap should go. Slide the strap onto the loop. Tack other side of loop end down on other side of strap.
  39. Bind the edges of body of bag with the yellow strips you cut. This will secure the strap loops too.
  40. Mark where you want to sew your snaps on for the body flap and the front pocket flap. Hand sew the four magnets on, making sure your needle doesn’t go through the flaps.

JOANN HACKS:

  • A new chopstick works well for turning corners right side out as on the flaps.
  • You can add more top-stitching if you like the look or if you want more stability.

  9. Top Handle: Cut one piece 12"x 4" of the darker blue ground fabric.

Tack other side of loop end down on other side of strap.
  38. Bind the edges of body of bag with the yellow strips you cut. This will secure the strap loops too.
  39. Mark where you want to sew your snaps on for the body flap and the front pocket flap. Hand sew the four magnets on, making sure your needle doesn’t go through the flaps.
