GAUGE
17 sts and 36 rows = 4" [10 cm] in garter st.

DIRECTIONS

Cast on 36 sts.
Knit 9 rows (garter st) noting that first row is WS.

Shape Thumb: 1st row: (RS). K16. (Kfb) twice. Knit to end of row.
2nd to 4th rows: Knit.
5th row: K16. Kfb. K2. Kfb. Knit to end of row.
6th to 8th rows: Knit.
9th row: K16. Kfb. K4. Kfb. Knit to end of row.
10th to 12th rows: Knit.
Cont in this manner, inc 2 sts on next and following 4th rows until there are 48 sts.
Next row: Knit.
Next row: K29. Turn. Cast on 1 st. K14 (including st on needle after cast on). Turn. Cont on these 14 sts for thumb.
Next 10 rows: Knit.
Next row: *K1. K2tog. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 10 sts.
Next row: Knit.
Next row: (K2tog) 5 times. 5 sts. Break yarn leaving a long end. Thread through rem sts. Draw up tightly and fasten securely. Sew thumb seam.
Hand: Next row: With RS of Mitt facing, join yarn to rem sts.
Pick up and knit 2 sts under thumb. Knit to end of row.
Next row: Knit, working K2tog over 2 sts picked up under thumb. 36 sts.
Next 16 rows: Knit.

Shape top: 1st row: K1. ssk. K12. K2tog. K2. ssk. K12. K2tog. K1. 32 sts.
2nd and alt rows: Knit.
