Sweater is worked in one piece from the neck downwards.
The crochet is in joined and turned rounds, with the join at the center back.
The sleeves are worked directly from the armholes.
The owl is worked in intarsia crochet, following chart. When working intarsia, do not carry yarn not in use across WS of work, use a separate ball for each section of color. Wind C, D, and E into 2 separate balls, and B and F into 3 separate balls before beginning.
To change yarn color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Proceed with new color.
SWEATER:
With A, ch 70 (76, 82).
Rnd 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (3 skipped ch count as dc) and in each ch across; join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3 - you will have 68 (74, 80) dc in this rnd.
NOTES:
Use the beginning yarn tail to sew the gap at base of the first rnd closed.
Place markers to indicate increase locations. Beg in same st as joining sl st, count first 13 (14, 15) sts for half of back and place a marker in the next sp between sts, count next 8 (9, 10) sts for one sleeve and place a marker in the next sp between sts, count next 26 (28, 30) sts for front and place a marker in the next sp between sts, count next 8 (9, 10) sts for second sleeve and place a marker in the next sp between sts.
Move markers to sp between sts at increase locations as each rnd is worked.
Rnd 2 (Increase Rnd): Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, *dc in each st to next marked sp, 2 dc in marked sp; rep from * 3 more times, dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 - 76 (82, 88) dc.
Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2 - 84 (90, 96) dc.
BEGIN OWL CHART:
NOTES:
There are now 30 (32, 34) front sts between increase markers.
In the next rnd, markers are placed to indicate where to work the Owl Chart. Use markers of a different color so that it is easy to tell the difference between increase markers and chart markers.
Owl is worked following Owl Chart. Change yarn color following chart. Read RS rnds from right to left and WS rnds from left to right.
Rnd 1 (Increase Rnd - RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, (dc in each st to next increase marker, 2 dc in marked sp) twice, dc in next 0 (1, 2) sts, place marker, work Row 1 of Owl Chart, pm, dc in next 0 (1, 2) sts, 2 dc in marked sp, dc in each st to next increase marker, 2 dc in marked sp, dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 - 92 (98, 104) dc. Note: When you see '0' repeats in an instruction, this means that for that size, you should not work any sts, just skip to the next part of the instruction.
Rnd 2 (Increase Rnd): Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, (dc in each st to next increase marker, 2 dc in marked sp) twice, dc in each st to first chart marker, work next row of Owl Chart between chart markers, (dc in each st to next increase marker, 2 dc in marked sp) twice, dc in each st around; join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 - 100 (106, 112) dc.
