Earrings are made using 2 knots - Lark's Head and Diagonal Double Half Hitch.
Yarn amount is sufficient to make 6-7 pairs of earrings.
EARRINGS (make 2):
Cut 10 lengths of yarn, each 18in long.
Use a T-pin to pin the earring square onto a flat, pinnable surface (foamcore, mattress, ironing board, etc.).
Orient the square so that the shape is a diamond.
Make Lark's Head knots following the steps below to attach yarn to the first side of the diamond shape.
Lark's Head knot:
Step 1. Fold one length of yarn in half. Hold the folded end in front of the earring hardware.
Step 2. Wrap folded end over earring hardware, from front to back to make a loop.
Step 3. Pull yarn ends through loop.
Step 4. Tighten loop around earring hardware.
In same way, knot the remaining 9 lengths of yarn along the same side of the diamond shape.
Row 1 Left Side
Diagonal Double Half Hitch knots:
Step 1: Take the far left yarn length (yarn 1) and lay it diagonally over top of all the lengths of yarn. This will be the anchor yarn around which knots will be tied.
Step 2: Take the next yarn length in from the left (yarn 2) from underneath (yarn 1) and wrap it around (yarn 1). The tail of the yarn will pass over the anchor yarn. Gently tighten the knot around (yarn 1) to complete the knot. Be careful not to over tighten.
Step 3: Using the same length of yarn repeat the same process taking (yarn 2) and wrapping it around (yarn 1) again to create the second knot. Each length of yarn will be knotted twice around the anchor yarn.
Repeat this series of Diagonal Double Half Hitch knots for the remaining 8 lengths of yarn to complete the first row on the left side.
Row 1 Right Side:
To create Row 1 on the right side repeat the above steps for the Diagonal Double Half Hitch knot, but using the far right piece of yarn as (yarn 1) and the next length of yarn from the right to wrap around the anchor yarn (yarn 1). Repeat this series of Diagonal Double Half Hitch knots for the remaining 8 lengths of yarn to complete the first row on the right side.
Join left and right sides of Row 1
Join left and right anchor yarns by taking the left anchor yarn and wrap it around your right anchor yarn twice in a Diagonal Double Half Hitch. Gently tighten the knot.
Rows 2 and 3:
Repeat the steps used to make Row 1, including joining the left and right sides.
Row 5:
To create Row 5 on the left side, use the the 8th strand of yarn from the left as (yarn 1), use the next piece of yarn to the right and wrap around the anchor yarn making a Diagonal Double Half Hitch.
Repeat for the right side.
Join left and right sides of Row 5.
Join left and right anchor yarns by taking the left anchor yarn and wrap it around your right anchor yarn twice in a Diagonal Double Half Hitch. Gently tighten the knot.
FINISHING:
At the end of Row 5, trim the yarn strands to about 1 1/2in, cutting at an angle to match the angle of the strands.
With your fingers or a hair comb, comb through the strands to make fringe. Trim any uneven ends.
With pliers, open the lower loop of an ear wire just enough to attach the macrame diamond shape.
With pliers, close the opening.
