DIRECTIONS:

STITCH EXPLANATIONS:
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
yo (yarn over):
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES:
Hat is worked in rnds from the lower edge upwards, beginning on a circular needle then changing to double pointed needles as sts are decreased to shape top.
Scarf is worked back and forth in rows on a circular needle, just as if working on straight needles.

HAT:
With smaller circular needle, cast on 80 sts.
Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Ribbed edge:
Rnd 1: * K1, p1 tbl; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnds 2-26: Rep Rnd 1.
Change to larger circular needle.
Increase Rnd: * K8, M1; rep from * to end of rnd - you will have 90 sts in this rnd.

BODY:
Rnd 1: * Yo, k2, pass yo over the 2 knit sts and off the right needle; rep from * to end of rnd - 90 sts.
Rnds 2 and 3: Knit.
Rep Rnds 1-3 until piece measures about 9 3/4 in. (25 cm) from beg, end with a Rnd 1 as the last rnd you work.
Shape Top of Hat:
Note: Change to double pointed needles as you work the next rnd.
Rnd 1: * K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - you'll have 45 sts.
Rnd 2: K1, * k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 23 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close opening at top of Hat.
Knot securely.

FINISHING:
Weave in ends.

SCARF:
Note: The Scarf was designed with 8 rows of Twisted Rib at one end and 6 rows at opposite end. If you prefer to have the ends of the Scarf match, just work 6 rows of rib at both ends.
PATTERN STITCH FOR SCARF:
Twisted Rib (worked over an even number of sts):
Row 1: Sl 1 as if to purl, p1 tbl, * k1, p1 tbl; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: Sl 1 as if to purl, k the knit sts and p the purl sts through the back loop (tbl).
Rep Row 2 for Twisted Rib pattern for Scarf.

SCARF:
With larger circular needle, loosely cast on 38 sts.
Work in Twisted Rib pattern for 8 rows.
Next Row: Work 4 sts in Twisted Rib pattern, knit to last 4 sts, work last 4 sts in Twisted Rib pattern.
Keeping first and last 4 sts in Twisted Rib pattern for borders and sts between borders in St st (k on RS, p on WS) work 3 rows.
Begin pattern:
Row 1: Work 4 sts in Twisted Rib, * yo, k2, pass yo over the 2 knit sts and off the right needle; rep from * to last 4 sts, work last 4 sts in Twisted Rib.
Rows 2-4: Work 4 sts in Twisted Rib, work in St st to last 4 sts, work last 4 sts in Twisted Rib.
Rows 5-10: Work in Twisted Rib pattern across all sts.
Rep pattern Rows 1-10 for 10 more times.
Bind off loosely.

FINISHING:
Weave in ends.
Block Scarf to measurements.
