SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Lion Brand TWO OF WANDS HUE+ME (Art. #617)
- #178 Juniper 4 balls
- Lion Brand large-eyed blunt needle
- Crochet hook size L-11 (8 mm)
- SIZE:
- Finished Height About 17"
- Finished Width About 19", not including handles
- Finished Handle Length About 21"
- GAUGE:
- 8 sts + 7 rnds/rows = about 4" in Alpine St pattern (Rnds 13-16 of pattern below). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
- Note: To make a gauge swatch, work in rows as follows:
- Ch 14.
- Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook (2 skipped ch do not count as a st), dc in each ch across - you will have 12 dc in this row.
- Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
- Row 3: Ch 2 (does not count as a st in this row and in all following rows), turn, dc in first sc, FPdc around next dc 2 rows below, * dc in next sc, FPdc around next dc 2 rows below; rep from * across.
- Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
- Row 5: Ch 2, turn, FPdc around first dc 2 rows below, dc in next sc, * FPdc around next dc 2 rows below, dc in next sc; rep from * across.
- Rep Rows 2-5 until swatch is desired length.
DIRECTIONS:
STITCH EXPLANATIONS:FPdc (Front Post double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop to height of previous st(s), (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip top of st behind the FPdc.
Fhdc (Foundation half double crochet)
Note: This stitch creates a base ch AND an hdc st in one. In this design, Fhdc are worked between sts of a rnd to make handles.
1. Yarn over, insert hook in base of last stitch made and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet").
2. * Yarn over, insert hook into the "chain" of the half double crochet just made and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet"); repeat from * the total number of times indicated.
NOTES:
Tote is worked in joined rnds from the base upwards. Do not turn at the beginning of rnds, work with right side always facing.
Handles are worked directly onto top of Tote.
We suggest reading through the pattern before beginning to be sure you're comfortable with the stitches and techniques used in this project.
TOTE:

Note: Always begin work in the same st as the joining sl st of the previous rnd.
Rnds 10 and 11: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Alpine Stitch Pattern
Tips for working the Alpine Stitch Pattern
Double crochet sts (dc) are worked into single crochet (sc) sts and Front Post double crochet sts (FPdc) are worked around double crochet sts 2 rnds below.
The order of dc and FPdc will alternate in each new rnd; either FPdc followed by dc and so on, or dc followed by FPdc and so on.
The FPdc sts are worked in dc sts 2 rnds below. A dc 2 rnds below is in the rnd numbered 2 less than the rnd being worked. For example, when working Rnd 3, a dc 2 rnds below is in Rnd 3 - 2 = Rnd 1.
When working an FPdc st around a dc st 2 rnds below, always remember to skip the top of the single crochet behind the FPdc.
Rnd 12: Ch 2 (does not count as a st in this rnd and in all following rnds), dc in each st around; join with sl st in first dc.
Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 14: Ch 2, dc in same st as joining sl st, FPdc around next dc 2 rnds below (remember to skip the top of the sc behind the FPdc), * dc in next sc, FPdc around next dc 2 rnds below; rep from * around; join with sl st in first dc.
Rnd 15: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 16: Ch 2, FPdc around first dc 2 rnds below, dc in next st, *FPdc around next dc 2 rnds below, dc in next sc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first FPdc.
Rnd 17-36: Rep Rnds 13-16 for 5 more times.
Rnd 37: Ch 2, hdc in each st around; join with sl st in first hdc.
Rnd 38: Sl st in each st around; join with sl st in first sl st.
Handles
Rnd 39: Ch 2, working behind sl sts of Rnd 38 work into sts of Rnd 37, hdc in first 12 sts, Fhdc 44 for handle, sk next 14 sts, hdc in next 26 sts, Fhdc 44 for second handle, sk next 14 sts, hdc in last 14 sts; join with sl st in first hdc - 140 sts (52 hdc and 2 sets of 44 sts each for handles).
Rnd 40: Sl st in each st around; join with sl st in first sl st.
Fasten off.
