DIRECTIONS:
STITCH EXPLANATION:FPdc (Front Post double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip top of st behind the FPdc.
NOTES:
Pillow is made from 7 pieces: Front, Back, 2 Cheeks, 2 Eyes, and a Mouth.
Front and Back are worked in continuous rnds (spiral). Do not turn at beg of rnds.
Cheeks, Eyes, and Mouth are worked separately and sewn to Back and Front to form a happy face on Front and a sad face on Back.
Front and Back are crocheted together and stuffed.
Exact gauge is not essential for this project. We worked tightly so the stuffing didn't show through the spaces between sts.
FRONT:
With larger hook, wrap A around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop. Carefully slip ring from finger and work sts of Rnd 1 into ring.
Center
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 10 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).
Place a marker in last st made to indicate end of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around - you will have 20 sc in this rnd.
Rnd 3: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 4: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - 30 sc.
Rnd 5: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around - 40 sc.
Rnd 6: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * around - 50 sc.
Rnd 7: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 8: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around - 60 sc.
Rnd 9: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 10: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * around - 70 sc.
Rnd 11: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 12: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around - 80 sc.
Rnd 13: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 14: * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 sts; rep from * around - 90 sc.
Rnd 15: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 16: (Sl st, ch 3, sl st) in each st around; join with sl st in first sl st - 90 ch-3 sps.
Fasten off.
Edging
Rnd 1 (RS): Push ch-3 sps of Rnd 16 forward so that you can reach the back loops of the sts in Rnd 15. From RS with larger hook, draw up a loop of B in back loop of any sc in Rnd 15. Working in back loops of Rnd 15 sts only, ch 1, sc in same st as joining, dc in next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, * sc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc - 120 sts.
Note: Work first st of each rnd around in same st as joining sl st.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, * FPdc around next sc, dc in next 7 dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first FPdc - Fifteen 7-dc groups and 15 FPdc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, * FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first FPdc - Fifteen 8-dc groups and 15 FPdc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, * FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next 8 dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first FPdc.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, * FPdc around next FPdc, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc; rep from * around; join with sl st in first FPdc - Fifteen 10-dc groups and 15 FPdc.
Fasten off.
Rnd 6: From RS with larger hook, join C with sl st in any FPdc, sc in next 10 dc, * sl sl in next FPdc, sc in next 10 dc; rep from * around - 165 sts.
Fasten off.
BACK:
Center
With C, make same as Center of Front.
Edging
Make same as Edging of Front, using D for Rnds 1-5 and A for Rnd 6. Do not cut A, it will be used later to crochet Front and Back together.
CHEEKS (make 4 - 2 with A for Back and 2 with C for Front):
With smaller hook, wrap yarn around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop. Carefully slip ring from finger and work sts of Rnd 1 into ring.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 6 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral).
Place a marker in last st made to indicate end of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc - 12 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
MOUTH (make 2):
With smaller hook and B, ch 20.
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
LEFT EYEBROW (make 2):
With smaller hook and D, ch 14 for base ch.
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch; for first eyelash: ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch; sl st in next 2 ch of base ch; for 2nd eyelash: ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch; sl st in next 2 ch of base ch; for 3rd eyelash: ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch; sl st in last 5 ch of base ch.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
RIGHT EYEBROW (make 2):
With smaller hook and D, ch 14 for base ch.
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 ch; for first eyelash: ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch; sl st in next 2 ch of base ch; for 2nd eyelash: ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch; sl st in next 2 ch of base ch; for 3rd eyelash: ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch; sl st in last 4 ch of base ch.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
FINISHING:
Front
Sew 2 Eyebrows to Front.
Sew Mouth in an upwards curve (for smile) below Eyebrows.
Sew C-colored Cheeks to sides of Mouth.
Back
Sew 2 Eyebrows to Back.
Sew Mouth in a downwards curve (for sad) below Eyebrows.
Sew A-colored Cheeks to sides of Mouth.
Weave in ends.
Hold Front and Back with WS facing and sts matching.
Working through back loops only of both thicknesses, using A still attached to Back, sl st in each st around, leaving about 4" open.
Stuff pillow, then sl st in in remaining sts to close Pillow.
