Hat begins with a ribbed lower band, then is worked in one piece in rnds from the lower edge upwards.
Body of Hat is worked in a simple knit and purl pattern.
Work begins on a circular needle, changing to double pointed needles when sts have been sufficiently decreased.
Top of Hat is shaped with simple decreases.

HAT:
With circular needle and A, cast on 96 sts.
Place marker for beg of rnd and join by knitting the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist the sts.
Rib Rnd: * K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rib Rnd until piece measures about 2in from beg.
Change to B.
Rnds 1 and 2: Knit.
Rnds 3 and 4: * K1, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnds 1-4 until piece measures about 7 1/2in from beg, end with a Rnd 2 as the last rnd you work.
Shape Top of Hat:
Note: Change to double pointed needles when stitches have been sufficiently decreased.
Rnd 1: * K2, p2tog; rep from * around - you will have 72 sts in this rnd.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not sure about the instructions I tried this. Really. I followed the instructions faithfully. Then I ripped it out. I did it in a thicker yarn, completed a 2x2 rib, then knit two rounds, then started two rounds of 2x2 and two rounds straight knitting. Then I picked up the instructions at decreasing the top. Mine looked like the picture. So my thought is who the heck reads these instructions prior to publishing? I think they only see if the words are misspellled (!) which might be helpful, but I’m looking for INSTRUCTIONS! When I took classes pre Covid, my instructors always tried to do it according to what Joann publishes for that class. Invariably there were many corrections. That just isn’t right. I still managed 20 HNH beanies.
