k1b (knit 1 in row below) Insert tip of right needle through center of st 1 row below next st on left needle and knit the st, slipping the st above off the needle.
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
sssk (slip, slip, slip, knit) Slip next 3 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 3 sts and knit them tog - 2 sts decreased.
PATTERN STITCHES:
P1, k1 Rib (worked over an even number of sts)
Row 1 (RS): *P1, k1; rep from * across.
Row 2: P the purl sts and k the knit sts.
Rep Row 2 for P1, k1 Rib.
Shaker Rib (worked over an even number of sts)
Row 1: Sl 1 as if to purl with yarn in back (wyib), *k1b, k1; rep from * to last st, p1.
Rep Row 1 for Shaker Rib pattern.
Note: In each row of Shaker Rib, you'll knit into the k1b sts, and k1b below the knit sts of the previous row.
NOTES:
Cardi is made from 5 pieces: Back, 2 Fronts, and 2 Sleeves.
All 5 pieces are worked from the lower edge upwards and can be worked on straight needles or on circular needle (back and forth in rows as if working with straight needles), whichever you prefer.
When you see 'as established' in the instructions, this means to continue in the current pattern st, lining up sts as in previous rows.
With yarn in back (wyib) refers to the side of the work that is away from you as you work the row. To move yarn from front to back or back to front, bring yarn between needles. Take care not to wrap yarn over a needle, this could create an additional st.
BACK:
Cast on 72 (80, 88, 92, 100) sts.
Work in P1, k1 Rib until piece measures about 1 1/2in from beg, end with a RS row as the last row you work.
Next Row (WS): Knit.
Work in Shaker Rib pattern until piece measures about 22in from beg, end with a WS row.
SHAPE NECK:
Row 1 (RS): Work in Shaker Rib pattern as established over first 24 (28, 32, 34, 38) sts for right side of neck, join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 24 sts, work in Shaker Rib pattern as established to end of row for left side of neck - 24 (28, 32, 34, 38) sts for each side of neck.
Work even in Shaker Rib pattern as established over both sides of neck AT THE SAME TIME, using separate balls of yarn, until piece measures about 24in from beg.
Bind off loosely.
LEFT FRONT:
Cast on 34 (38, 42, 44, 48) sts.
Work in P1, k1 Rib until piece measures about 1 1/2in from beg, end with a RS row as the last row you work.
Next Row (WS): Knit.
Work in Shaker Rib pattern until piece measures about 15in from beg, end with a WS row.
SHAPE NECK:
Row 1 (Decrease Row - RS): Work in Shaker Rib pattern as established to last 6 sts, k3tog, continue in Shaker Rib pattern as established to end of row - 32 (36, 40, 42, 46) sts.
Next 3 Rows: Work even in Shaker Rib pattern as established.
Rep Row 1 - 30 (34, 38, 40, 44) sts.
Rep last 4 rows for 3 more times - 24 (28, 32, 34, 38) sts.
Work even in Shaker Rib pattern as established, until piece measures about 24in from beg.
Bind off loosely.
RIGHT FRONT:
Cast on 34 (38, 42, 44, 48) sts.
Work in P1, k1 Rib until piece measures about 1 1/2in from beg, end with a RS row as the last row you work.
Next Row (WS): Knit.
Work in Shaker Rib pattern until piece measures about 15in from beg, end with a WS row.
SHAPE NECK:
Row 1 (Decrease Row - RS): Sl 1 as if to purl wyib, k1b, sssk, k1b, continue in Shaker Rib pattern as established to end of row - 32 (36, 40, 42, 46) sts.
Next 3 Rows: Work even in Shaker Rib pattern as established.
Rep Row 1 - 30 (34, 38, 40, 44) sts.
Rep last 4 rows for 3 more times - 24 (28, 32, 34, 38) sts.
Work even in Shaker Rib pattern as established, until piece measures about 24 in. (61 cm) from beg.
Bind off loosely.
SLEEVES (make 2):
Cast on 44 sts.
Work in P1, k1 Rib until piece measures about 1 1/2in from beg, end with a RS row as the last row you work.
Next Row (WS): Knit.
Increase Row (RS): Sl 1 as if to purl wyib, M1, work in Shaker Rib pattern as established to last st, M1, p1 - 46 sts.
Continue in Shaker Rib pattern as established and rep Increase Row every row 0 (0, 0, 0, 3) more times, every other row 0 (1, 9, 9, 9) times, then every 4th row 9 (8, 2, 2, 0) times, working new sts in Shaker Rib pattern - 64 (64, 68, 68, 70) sts when all increases have been completed. Note: When you see '0' repeats in an instruction, this means that for that size, you should not perform that particular instruction, just skip to the next instruction.
Work even in Shaker Rib as established until piece measures about 10 (9 1/2, 8 1/4, 8, 7)in from beg.
Bind off loosely.
FINISHING:
Block pieces to schematic measurements.
Sew shoulder seams.
FRONT BAND:
From RS with circular needle, beg at lower right front corner, pick up and k292 sts evenly spaced up front edge, along back neck, and down next front edge to lower left front corner. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working with straight needles.
Work in P1, k1 Rib for about 3/4in.
Place 7 markers on right front for buttonholes, placing the first about 1/2in above lower edge, the last about 1/2in below beg of neck shaping, and remaining 5 markers evenly spaced between first and last.
Buttonhole Row 1: * Work in P1, k1 Rib as established to next marker, bind off 4 sts; rep from * 6 more times, work in P1, k1 Rib as established to end.
Buttonhole Row 2: * Work in P1, k1 Rib as established to next set of bind off sts, cast on 4 sts; rep from * 6 more times, work in P1, k1 Rib as established to end.
Work even in P1, k1 Rib as established until front band measures about 1 1/2in.
Bind off.
Place markers on Back and Fronts, about 9 (9, 9 1/2, 9 1/2, 9 3/4)in from shoulder seams. Sew Sleeves between markers.
Sew Sleeve and side seams.
Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
Weave in ends.
