Advanced Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Outdoor fabric: amount determined by size of cushions (allow extra if matching stripes or other design)
  • Cotton Cording: length + width of foam cushion x 4
  • Zipper, length determined by the size of cushion
  • Thread
  • Rotary blade & cutting mat
  • Clear ruler
  • Tape measure
  • Gauge
  • Heavy duty machine needles, straight pins
  • Sewing machine with zipper foot

DIRECTIONS:

    Note: 1/2" seam allowance.
  1. Cut fabric for the top & bottom of the cushion, 1" larger on all sides
  2. Gusset fabric: Cut one (length + width + 1" x depth + 2" of the gusset and one (length + width + 1" x depth + 1")
  3. Cut bias strips for piping 2" wide & long enough to cover cotton cording. Sew bias strips together.
  4. Create Binding: Wrap (encase) the cording by folding the bias strip so RS is on outside. Use a zipper foot to stitch close to the cording.
  5. Pin the the piping to the RS of the top cushion piece. Begin stitching 1" from the beginning of the cording. Keep stitching along the line of stitching next to the cording.
  6. When you reach the corner clip the seams of the piping to the allow it to ease around the corner.
  7. When you get back to the beginning of the binding, stop stitching a couple inches before the end. Push the fabric back and pull the cording out. Clip off enough of the piping so it meets the beginning beginning. Fold the remaining fabric and tuck it under the space left at the beginning. Finish stitching.
  8. Repeat to add piping for the bottom fabric piece.
  9. Gusset: This step depends on whether a zipper is used and the type of cushion being made.
  10. Adding at the zipper will depend on the type of cushion being made. In general stitch the gusset pieces together to create a long piece that wraps around the cushion.
  11. Stitch the gusset to the top piece using the zipper foot. Stitch on the top piece to follow the stitching line created when the piping was applied.
  12. Repeat with to attach the bottom piece.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Use bias cut for binding to create a more professional looking cushion.
  • Prepare fabric by matching stripes or designs before cutting.
  • Before sewing pieces together: pin carefully to achieve matching stripes and/or patterns.
