SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3/4 yd quilted fabric
  • 1/4 yd sequin fabric
  • Scraps of ribbon for horn and ear
  • 9" of batting
  • 1 pkg cording
  • 2" of Velcro®
  • Sewing notions
  • Kraft paper
  • Pencil
  • Size 14 or 16 sewing machine needle
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern

DIRECTIONS:

    All seams are 5/8” unless stated.
  1. Cut two 14 1/2” square pieces of quilted fabric.
  2. Cut one 14 1/2" x 10” piece for top flap.
  3. Cut 1 1/2" x 4" piece for tab.
  4. Cut two 24" pieces of cording.
  5. Create your own unicorn figure by drawing and cutting out a piece of kraft paper 9" H x 7" W, then shape into a unicorn.
  6. Straight stitch your unicorn onto the quilted fabric. Outline the hair, eyes and nose with curled stitches.
  7. Cut out a cone 4" x 2" for the horn and sew ribbon on. Then cut horn to fit to the head of your unicorn. Finally, cut out a curved ear and place near the horn.
  8. Zig zag outer edges for neat edging.
  9. Fold and sew tab in half, finishing 1/2" wide. Fold the length in half, place at the center top of backpack.
  10. Fold top flap in half, sew sides. Sew to the top of Unicorn side of backpack. Hem the top opening back of backpack. Mark and place at the bottom for cording 3” on each side of center.
  11. On the back and front backpack, make a 1" pleat on each side 4 1/2" from center.
  12. Sew back and front right sides together, rounding corners at the bottom, turning right sides out.
  13. Tie ends of cording into a knots and sew to top of backpack.
  14. Sew Velcro to flap and back for closer.
