SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2yd solid orange fleece
  • 1/3yd Mandalorian print fleece
  • 14" pillow form
  • Rotary cutter & mat
  • Ruler
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine with walking foot
  • Iron and pressing surface

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Note: 1/4" seam allowance used throughout.
  2. Set up the machine for a straight stitch and place the walking foot on the machine.
  3. Cut out eight 4" squares of the helmet-printed fleece.
  4. Cut out eight 4" squares of the orange fleece.
  5. Cut two rectangles of orange fleece 14 1/2"x 10" for the envelope-style backing.
  6. Layout the helmet squares alternated with the orange squares arranging the helmet designs so all one color is not grouped together, spread out the colors.
  7. From the top row pick up the two squares on the left side and prepare to sew them together with a 1/4" seam. Before sewing, gently stretch the fabric squares and turn the orange square so the most stretch is going the same direction as the most stretchy direction of the helmet square. By carefully arranging the direction of the stretch the completed patchwork will lay flat. Sew the first two squares together and place back in the top row. Repeat with the two squares on the right side of the top row. In the same manner sew the pairs for the rest of the rows together. Starting with the top row sew the two pairs together and place back as the top row with the other squares. Repeat with the remaining three rows. Sew the rows together to finish the patchwork top.
  8. On the wrong side press the seams open using a warm iron, not too hot or the fabric may melt.
  9. Trim the edges as needed.
  10. Place the patchwork pillow front face up on the work surface. Sew a 1" hem on the long side of one of the backing pieces. Place the hemmed piece face down on the patchwork matching up the three raw edges of the backing with three edges of the patchwork. Place the other backing piece on the patchwork piece overlapping the two back pieces and matching three raw edges of the second back with the raw edges of the patchwork. Sew all around. Trim the corners and turn right side out.
  11. Fill with the pillow form.
