Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Ribbed Top: McCall's 8144
  • Fabric per pattern jacket for top
  • Ribbed Skirt: Simplicity 9237
  • Fabric per pattern jacket for skirt

DIRECTIONS:

RIBBED TOP
  1. Take measurements for the desired length of the the top.
  2. Cut the garment per pattern instructions.
  3. Right sides together sew the center front seam.
  4. Right sides together sew the shoulder seams and cowl neck in one stitch.
  5. Clip the neck of the cowl collar at the patterns notches.
  6. At the clippings, fold the cowl collar to the wrong side of the garment, matching at neck seams, facing off and completing the collar.
  7. Tack the collar according to seam allowances.
  8. Construct the body of the garment by sewing the side seams.
  9. Sew the underarm of the sleeve, run basting stitches at hem.
  10. Assemble the ribbed cuffs per pattern instructions, attach to the gathered hem of the sleeve.
  11. Insert the sleeves into the top, ease and match at notches.
  12. Hem the top within the pattern's seam allowance.
RIBBED SKIRT
  1. Take measurements for the desired length of the the skirt.
  2. Stay stitch the waist of front and back skirt.
  3. Press under the seam allowance of the asymmetrical skirt fronts, stitch into place.
  4. To create the asymmetrical feature, overlap the skirt fronts matching at notches, baste in place.
  5. Per pattern instructions sew the darts on back skirt.
  6. Assemble the body of the skirt by sewing the front and back at side seams.
  7. Construct the waistband per pattern instructions, apply to the skirt.
  8. Hem the skirt within the patterns seam allowance.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When working with ribbed knits, stitch along the neck, armhole and waist seams. This will maintain the structure of important features for a garment.
  • Stitch ribbed fabrics at smaller seam allowances to reduce a bulky garment.
