DIRECTIONS:
- Decide on the overall rough dimensions you would like your wall hanging. This type of wall hanging uses a lot of different mediums and has an organic shape so be flexible within an inch or two of your original plan. This wall hanging is roughly 18" wide by 30" long.
- Cut your dowels several inches longer than your overall width and start creating your weaving base by tying a piece of yarn to the top dowel and looping it back and forth between the top and bottom dowels to the desired length.
- The amount of strings you want to use as your weaving base depends on how tight you would like your weaving. If you want a more loose and organic shape you can put a string every 1-2 inches. If you'd like a more tightly woven piece put them every 1/2" or so.
- When your base is complete, hang your weaving from a comfortable place so that you have access to the front and back of your piece.
- There are a variety of techniques you can use for your mixed media piece including: traditional "under over" weaving, locker hooks, fabric strips, braiding yarn together, tassel making, using different thicknesses of yarn, etc. Don't be afraid to experiment as you go because you can always take off a piece you don't like and start over.
- If you'd like to plan out your design in advance, you can sketch out a gesture and use the yarn, fabric, colors, etc. to make that gesture a reality or leave room for experimentation.
JOANN HACKS:
- Tape/tie your dowels onto a structure such as an easel or chair back before winding yarn back and forth.
