SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Simplicity 8699 sewing pattern
- Basic sewing supplies
- Sewing machine with walking foot
- Iron
- Craft paper
- Tape
- Ruler
- French curve ruler
- 3yds total of MLB and solid fabric
- 1yd lightweight fusible interfacing
- 7/8" buttons, 2
- Medium sew-in snaps, 2
- Serger (highly recommended)
DIRECTIONS:
- For this project, Simplicity 8699 (view D) is hacked to create a high-low pieced wrap skirt. Choose the pattern size closest to body measurements. If a serger is unavailable to finish seams, use a narrow zigzag stitch and trim all pieced seams to 1/4".
- Determine finished length of skirt desired (for the featured project, 8" were added). Add this length to back, left front and right front pattern pieces using craft paper. On front pieces, a curved ruler will be used to draw a curved line from the longest length of hem to the shortest length of hem. Trim away excess paper.
- To match facing length, fold facing toward pattern on fold line, and copy change to be added to facing. Make same changes to facing interfacing.
- To create pieced look:
- Mark grain-line every 2" vertically on pattern. This is so when pattern pieces are eventually cut, grain-line can still be identified.
- When pieced design is determined, create lines on pattern pieces in separate color for easy identification.
- Add notches where seams intersect and write pattern number onto each separate piece before cutting to avoid mistakes.
- Add 5/8" seam allowance to all new seam locations on pattern pieces before cutting fabric.
- Finish each seam with serger (or zigzag stitch) and press seam to darker fabric side before sewing additional pieces.
- After piecing for back, left front and right front is finished, skirt may be sewn following manufacturer instructions for Simplicity 8699 (view D).
