Make templates #1 to #4 from template plastic. Set aside.
For all 21 blocks you will cut the same pieces from the prints and the solid with the exception of the center diamond. For the diamond shape use Template #1 and cut 9 of the background fabric and one of each print you use for the remaining 12 blocks (see layout).
DIRECTIONS FOR ONE BLOCK ARE AS FOLLOWS:
- Cut a 2" x WOF strip of background fabric and one of print fabric. Sew together lengthwise. Press seam open. Using template #3 place center line on seam and cut 2. Reverse template and cut 2 more.
- Using template #2 cut 2 each of print and background. Sew a print and a background piece together to form a diamond shape. Press seam open. Make 2.
- Cut 2 each of print and background using template #4. Sew a print and background piece together on long side. Press seam open. Make 2.
- Follow Diagram A to sew block together. Repeat process to make 21 blocks.
- Cut 27 strips from background fabric 2" x 13 1/2". Stitch a strip on top and between blocks in each of the 6 rows ending with strip as shown in Diagram B. Be sure to place strip where you can trim on angle of block after sewing.
- Cut 9 strips of background fabric 2" x WOF. Join together for lengthwise sashing on sides of rows 1 and 6 and between other rows. Your 7 pieces should measure approximately 29", 54", 76", 87", 64", 40" and 20". After sewing strips follow angles to trim at top and bottom of each row. Press seams open. Do not sew rows together at this time.
- Cut 6 diamond shapes to match block size. They will be 18 1/2" high and 10 7/8" at widest point. It will be easiest to use the large triangle template to help with this. Set aside.
- Cut 9 triangle shapes 10 1/4" high and 12 1/8" wide at bottom. If you have the triangle template it will be easiest.
- Sew diamonds and triangle shapes to top and bottom of rows as shown in diagram C. When finished press and trim around to square up.
- Cut 5 rows 2 1/2" x WOF and join together lengthwise. Sew a section to bottom of quilt top and a section to each side. Press.
- Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by only hand tying, mixed with machine quilting or as desired.
- Square up and bind quilt.
