SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Pattern Burda 9334 size 6. (S9277 as an option- create long sleeves and remove buttons)- Same yardage on pattern envelope also for lining.
  • Simplicity 1076 Size 6 for child. Size 10 for Adult. Same yardage on pattern envelope. Also same for lining.
  • 1/4 yd. of black lace for collar on child's dress.
  • 1/4 yd. of fusible interfacing
  • Velvet board (optional)
  • Kraft paper, pencil
  • Ruler
  • Thread
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:
  1. All seams are 5/8" unless stated.
Notes: Sewing velvet: use pins every 4 to 5" to keep the bottom velvet from puckering when sewing. Also pull fabric in the front and back of the presser foot while sewing.

  2. Velvet Board: The velvet board has pins sticking up from the base that keep the velvet from flattening when pressing. If you don't have a velvet board use a terry towel and just steam velvet collars or hems. Do not press like you would with a velvet board.
  3. Burda 9334 size 6 pattern inside facing: From the Center Front, measure at the bottom of jacket over 4", 2 1/2" at shoulder line. At 4" mark, use a pencil to put a straight line from the bottom of jacket up about 12", curving to the 2 1/2" shoulder line. Trace facing on a Kraft paper for the pattern. After cutting out facing, place on inside lining. Omit hood, pockets and front tab. Sew lining as you would sew the jacket to pattern instructions. Attach at neckline.
  4. Simplicity 1076 Child size 6: Cut skirt fabric by omitting cut outs. Add desired skirt length by adding to skirt pattern with Kraft paper. Cut out lining the same as dress but making the lining 3" shorter.
  5. Collar: Pin front and back at neckline pattern together at shoulder seam overlapping seam allowances. At shoulder seam by the armhole overlap seam allowances plus 1/2". This allows the collar to slightly roll.
  6. Draw collar by tracing neckline on Kraft paper. Center back will be on the fold. Draw collar starting at center back, go down 3". Draw a curve line, shaping the collar to the center front. Curve the front collar. Cut 1 lace collar, 2 out of velvet and 1 out of fusible interfacing. Press fusible to velvet (place right side of velvet down onto velvet board, place fusible on velvet and press). Place right side of lace to velvet, then place under collar to top collar, sew, turn and press (using the velvet board).
  7. Hem: Use stitch witchery for pressing the hem and sleeves with the velvet board.
  8. Adult Simplicity 1076: Sew pattern stated on pattern instructions. Sew lining the same as the dress instructions. Add the desired length of dress by omitting cut outs and making the hemline straight. Make lining 3" shorter than the dress. Press hem and sleeves using velvet board.
