DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  1. This project creates one monster and eight beanbags.
  2. To make the monster download and follow the design diagram provided (see Get Patterns tab).
  3. We used a foam core piece sandwiched between the three-panel project board and the astroturf for stability. Cut the foam core to match the front panel size of the project board.
  4. Use the mouth pattern provided or a compass to draw the mouth shape on the foam core. Cut the mouth shape out from the foam core using an X-acto knife. Use the large piece (with mouth removed) as a template to trace and cut the mouth from the three-panel project board.
  5. Again, using the large foam core piece (with mouth removed) as a template, trace the mouth shape on the back of the astroturf and cut using heavy-duty scissors or an X-acto. Use a compass or draw the curved shape of the top of the monster's head and cut using heavy-duty scissors or an X-acto.
  6. Use the pattern provided to cut two horns from the foam core. We cut ours from the scraps leftover from cutting out the mouth. Paint and decorate.
  7. Hot glue the monster together in this order back to front: three-panel project board, foam core, astroturf, horns, and lastly, the googly eye.
  8. Use the pattern provided to cut eight pieces of fabric for the beanbags. Fold the three 3/4" fold areas adhering with fabric fusion or hot glue.
  9. Fill eight plastic snacks bags with 1/2 cup of rice—seal each bag, pushing the extra air out as you close. We folded our bags of rice to fit better and added tape to secure them.
  10. To complete each beanbag to a finished size of 4"x 4" slide a baggie of rice inside, fold the 4" flap, and secure with fabric fusion or hot glue.

JOANN HACKS:

  • The provided monster design is only a suggestion—we strongly encourage designing your own monster.
  • To trace on the back of the astroturf, use a white pencil or marker.
  • Astroturf material can be heavy, so we secured the two seams of the project board with masking tape.
  • Ironing your fabric's folds before gluing gives your final design a crisper look.
  • This project was designed as a no-sew project, but the gluing can be replaced with simple sewing.
  • Decorate with paint, stencils & fabric markers or add embellishments to personalize your monster.
