SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Simplicity S8961
  • Cotton print, yardage per pattern envelope plus 1/3 yard for ruffle and hair accessory and/or belt
  • Thread 1/4 yard
  • Pellon SF101
  • Shape Flex Fusible Interfacing for headband bow
  • Elastic: 3/4 yard of 3/4" wide for skirt, 1/4 yard of 1/4" wide for each hair scrunchie
  • Safety pins

DIRECTIONS:

Use View A for Midi Skirt.
    Skirt Ruffle Variation:
  1. Mark a line on piece 1 (Skirt Front and Back) 6 1/2" above cutting line for bottom edge. Fold up pattern tissue on marked line. Cut out the front and back. Follow steps 1-4 and 9-17 to assemble skirt. Serge or zigzag to finish seams.
  2. Cut two pieces of fabric 7" x the width of the fabric. Trim off selvedges and sew short ends together in a 5/8" seam. Finish seams. Hem bottom edge by pressing 1/2" to the wrong side, folding raw edge in to meet crease and edge stitching in place.
  3. To gather upper edge of ruffle, sew a long machine stitch 1/2" and 1/4" from raw edge, breaking stitching at side seams. Mark the center front and back of skirt and ruffle. Pin ruffle to bottom of skirt, right sides together, matching side seams and centers. Evenly adjust ruffles and sew in a 1/2" seam. Zigzag or serge to finish raw edges and press seam toward skirt.

    Tie Belt
  1. Cut 2 pieces 7 1/2"x 36" for 3 1/2" wide tie belt (5 1/2"x 36" for 2 1/2" wide tie belt). Join in a 1/4" seam. Fold right sides together.
  2. At each short end, mark a dot on fold 1/4" from end and on raw edge 2" from end. Draw a diagonal line between dots and sew. Sew long edge in a 1/4" seam, leaving an opening to turn. Trim points, turn and press. Slipstitch opening closed.
  3. Tie over skirt at waistline.

    Scrunchie With Double Ties
  1. Cut fabric as follows: Scrunchie 3"x 16". Ties 5 1/2"x 17" and 5 1/2"x 15". Elastic: 7 1/2".
  2. Assemble scrunchie. Press in 1/4" on one short end. Fold right sides together and sew 1/4" seam along long edge, opening folded edge to sew. Sew elastic to unfolded end, stitching across short end. Attach a safety pin to free end of elastic. Turn, forming a
  3. tube, using the safety pin to pull elastic out the open end.
  4. Refold pressed end. Sew pinned end of elastic to closed end of tube, forming a circle. Remove pin and let closed end pull through the folded open end by 1/4". Sew across folded edge through all layers.
  5. Sew ties as for tie belt, creating diagonal ends. Turn, press and slipstitch the opening closed. Center the shorter tie over the long and tie together in an overhand knot, pulling tightly. Using a double thread, hand sew over the seam line on the scrunchie.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:
