Pencil Slim Skirt and Jacket
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Approximately 7/8 yd. of 54” wide fabric. Depending on length of skirt, add more for skirt longer than 3 1/2”.
- 1 pkg. of 1-1/4" elastic to match color of skirt
- Kraft paper
- Tissue paper for tracing pattern from draft
- Yard stick
- Curved measuring ruler
- Pencil
- Chalk
- Pressing Cloth
- 1 pkg. of Stitch Witchery
- Denim Jacket
- Iron on letters spelling out “Mother of Dragons”
- Thread
- Sewing Notions
DIRECTIONS:
- All seams are 1/2” unless stated.
- This pattern is a size 10. The finished measurements for the size 10 is: 29” waist, 37” Hip, and 31-1/2" length of skirt. For a custom size skirt, measure your waist, hip and length of skirt. When dividing the measurements the front will be 1-1/2" larger than the back. To draft the custom skirt pattern add 1” to waist, 2” to hip plus length of skirt.
- The custom pattern procedure will be the same as the size 10 only the measurements will differ.
- Step 1: Draw a straight line at the top, measure down 31-1/2” then draw a line across. The top line is the waistline, measure and mark for the front over 10”. Measure down 8” for the hip line, measure over 10”. Draw a straight line to the bottom hem line. This is the side seam of skirt.
- Step 2: From the side seam, measure over 8-1/2" from the hip, draw a straight line from the waist to hem line. This is the center back.
- Step 3: To create waist: measure over 3” from the center front then over 1” for the front dart. Draw from the center of dart a straight line down 6” for the length of dart. For the back dart, measure over 2-1/2” from the center back then over 1”. Draw a straight line down 7” from the center of a dart.
- Step 4: For the side seam curve of the waist, measure over 1” at the waistline. Starting at the hip line using the curved measuring ruler connect to the 1” line at the waistline. Fold over or close darts, pin or tape. Place curved rule starting at the center front, draw to the side seam. This will curve up slightly to accommodate the curve of the waist line. Repeat the same to the back waistline.
- Step 5: Trace the draft pattern with tissue paper to create the pencil slim skirt. Add 1/2" seam allowances to waist, sides and 1” for hem. Cut fabric out from the tissue paper.
- Step 6: Sew the center back seam, leaving and opening for the zipper measuring down 7-3/4” at the center back for the zipper. Measure up 10” from the hemline for the center back slit. Place an extra small square of skirt fabric, sew in to secure the slit at the 10” mark.
- Step 7: For the size 10, cut elastic 28” long for the waist. Cut custom waist, measurements elastic 1” smaller that waist. Lay elastic on right side of fabric, sew elastic to the waistline of skirt. The elastic should be slightly smaller than the skirt, but will fit nicely when wearing. Fold over elastic to the inside. Tack at side seams, and darts to secure. Sew zipper to center back including through the elastic. Hem skirt with a 1” hem by pressing the stitch witchery inside hem. Using the pressing cloth between the iron and fabric. Top stitch the center back slit 3/8” from the hem crossing over at the top turning down the other side to the hem.
- Jacket: Mother of Dragons:
- Mark the center back of jacket with chalk. Center purchased letters “Mother” at a curved angled on top. The “Of” in the second row. The “Dragons” on the lower level at a curved angle. Make sure letters are centered on each side of chalk marking.
