DIRECTIONS:

To find downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
NOTE: Mountain Template Guide and Sun and Moon Quilt Patterns files will need to be joined with tape.

  1. FROM WHITE FABRIC, CUT THE FOLLOWING:
    • Four strips at 4 1/2" wide x the width of fabric (WOF) for the left and right borders of the quilt.
    • Three strips at 3 1/2" x WOF for the center white strip on the quilt.

  2. FROM DARK FABRIC, CUT THE FOLLOWING:
    • Cut a total of eleven strips at 2 1/2" x WOF. Three of the strips will be for the top and bottom borders. The other eight will be for binding the quilt.
    • Put all strips aside till end of the project.

  3. Read all instructions on the Mountain Quilt Diagrams file to complete the quilt top.
  4. Follow the Mountain Quilt Template Guide to draw the patterns needed to make the Sun and Moon halves of the quilt.
  5. Follow the steps below to add the middle strip and borders to the Sun and Moon halves of the quilt.
  6. Measure the height of the Sun half.
  7. Trim the two 4 1/2" white fabric strips to that height and sew to the left and right side of the Sun half.
  8. Measure the height of the Moon half.
  9. Trim the remaining two 4 1/2" white fabric strips to that height and sew to the left and right side of the moon half.
  10. Press all seam allowances toward the 4 1/2" strips.
  11. Measure the width of both halves of the quilt.

  12. Cut one of the 3 1/2" White Fabric Center strips in half to make two half size strips.
  13. Trim off selvages from the remaining one 3 1/2" un-cut WOF Center strip.
  14. Sew a half size strip to a WOF strip to the full size strip end to end to make a strip that measures approximately 63" long.
  15. Press seam allowances open. Put aside.
  16. Repeat using the 2 1/2" Dark Blue strips to make two border strips that are approximately 63".
  17. Press seam allowances open on each border strip.
  18. Measure the width of Sun and Moon halves by measuring left to right along the top, middle and center.
  19. Find the average of the 6 measurements.
  20. The measurement should be approximately 53 1/2" but yours may vary.
  21. Trim two of border strips and the one center strip to YOUR average measurement.
  22. Pin and sew as shown on the Mountain Quilts Diagram file.
  23. Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top.
  24. Baste by pinning using quilters safety pins or spray baste.
  25. Quilt as desired.
  26. Bind the quilt.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When sewing border to a quilt, there may be times when a strip is a slightly different length than the row or quilt. When this happens, pin so that the longer of the two is on the bottom. To pin, fold a crease in the center of the row/quilt and a crease in the center of the sashing/border strip. Match the center creases of the strip to the row/quilt to pin at the center. Place a pin on the top and bottom, ease in between to even out any bulk underneath and pin as you go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Quilt pattern not found anywhere I have been looking forever for a quilt pattern using stars, sun and moon. This is more than perfect because it is using open areas of the design to show the vast sky.
