SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 5"x 18" Pine Board
  • 1´Dowel Rod
  • 2 pkg. (10 feet each) 3/8" Cotton Rope
  • 1 Pkg. 20mm Round Beads (8 quantity)
  • 1 3" Decorative Ring
  • 2 2" Metal Rings
  • Clear Tape
  • Safety Pin
  • Sand Paper
  • Clear Coat Spray
  • Electric Drill
  • 1/2" & 3/8" Drill Bits
  • Hand Saw
  • Sand Paper
  • Glue - optional

DIRECTIONS:

NOTE: to keep the rope from fraying, wrap a piece of tape around the rope at the cutting line before cutting.
  1. Cut 1" dowel rod to 19" with hand saw.
  2. Using a 1/2" drill bit, drill a hole 1 1/2" in from each end of dowel rod, sand as needed.
  3. Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill a hole 3/8" from each corner on the shelf, sand as needed.
  4. Spray with Clear Coat, allow to dry thoroughly.
  5. Cut a piece of rope approximately 60" long, fold it in half and loop it through the 3" decorative ring and secure with a Lark’s Head knot.
  6. Cut a piece of rope 18" long and loop it through the 3" ring and tie a Lark’s Head knot in the opposite direction.
  7. From one side of the knot, measure down the rope 12" and put in the safety pin through the rope to mark the place.
  8. Thread the rope end down through the hole in the dowel rod (using the safety pin as a stop) then through the metal ring and back up through the hole in the dowel rod.
  9. Pull it tight to the pin and tie a knot, remove the safety pin.
  10. Repeat with the other side.
  11. Cut 2 pieces of rope approximately 40".
  12. Fold one piece in half and loop it through the 2" metal ring and secure with a Lark’s Head knot.
  13. Thread 2 beads onto each side of the rope, push beads up.
  14. From the dowel rod, measure down 12" on each end of the rope and place a safety pin. (beads are above pin)
  15. Thread the rope ends through the holes in the corners of the shelf to the safety pin.
  16. Tie a knot below the shelf and remove safety pin.
  17. Repeat with the other side.
  18. Hang shelf to check that it is level and adjust knots as needed.
  19. For decorative effect, trim the ends of the rope to desired lengths and allow to unwind.

  • A drop of glue can be used to secure knots, if desired.
