SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Kraft paper or other large drawing paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Material - 1/2 yard
  • Straight pins
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Button
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread
  • Iron
  • Chalk

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Draft the envelope clutch pattern: Draw a rectangle that will be the body length and width of the finished clutch - 10" long x 6" wide. Then draw another 10"x 6" rectangle to be the back of the clutch, attached to the first rectangle at a shared line that will be the fold at the bottom of the clutch.

  2. You will now have a 10"x 12" rectangle with a line through the middle.

  3. Next you will draft the triangular flap. At one of the 10" sides, it doesn't matter which, mark the center point at 5 inches in. From that point, make a mark that is 4 1/2" out. That is the top point of the triangle. Then return to your 10" line and at both points of the line, draw a perpendicular line 2 inches out, then draw a line from the end of the 2 inch line to the center point. That is the envelope-shaped flap.

  4. Return to the 10"x 12" rectangle that is the front and back body of the clutch and extend both sides out about 3/8" for a seam allowance.

  5. Cut out pattern, attach it to material with straight pins, and cut out material with a rotary cutter on a cutting mat.

  6. With the iron on low, fold and press material at the bottom fold line, and at the flap fold line.

  7. Fold the clutch along the bottom fold line but with right sides together, and sew the interior side seams.

  8. _x000B_Flip the clutch back right side out, open the flap and make a light chalk mark at the center triangle tip where you want the button to come through. Measure your button's diameter and extend your light chalk mark to make a line that is long enough for the button diameter to go through, and make a cut through that light chalk line.

  9. Then, close the flap and make a light chalk mark through the center of the buttonhole that will indicate where the button will be sewn.

  10. Finally, sew the button onto that spot by hand.
