    • Strips will be sub-cut to squares or rectangles as indicated.

  2. LABEL THREE BAGS AS FOLLOWS:
    • 1. Square in a Square Bag
    • 2. Half Square Triangle Bag

    • Cut two 3" strips.
    • Sub-cut twenty 3" squares (Square in a Square bag).
    • Cut one 3 3/8" strip.
    • Sub-cut ten 3 3/8" squares (Half Square Triangle bag).

    • Sub-cut four 3 3/8" squares (Half Square Triangle bag).
    • Cut two 3" strips.
    • Sub-cut twelve 3" x 5 1/2" rectangles (Finishing bag).

  5. FABRIC B1 LARGE PRINT ON MEDIUM:
    • Cut one 5 1/2" strip.

    • Sub-cut six 3 3/8" squares (Half Square Triangle bag).
    • Cut two 3" strips.
    • Sub-cut eight 3" x 5 1/2" rectangles (Finishing bag).

  7. SEWING SQUARE IN A SQUARE BLOCKS:
    • Use pieces from the Square in a Square bag.
    • Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of each of the twenty 3" BKGD Fabric squares.
    • To make sure the line is drawn exactly across the center of the square, position the square with the top and bottom points directly over a grid line on the cutting or pressing mat.
    • To make the first Square in a Square block, gather four of the marked 3" BKGD Fabric squares and one 5 1/2" Fabric B1 square.
    • Place two of the marked BKGD Fabric squares on opposite corners of the Fabric B1 square (RST).
    • Check to see that all corners line up and pin in place.
    • Carefully sew right up against the line, with needle touching the edge of the line.
    • Use a zigzag or open toe presser foot to get a clear view of the drawn line.
    • The stitch line (or seam) should be towards the outside of the square on either side. This will help keep the corners lined up when fabric is folded over the seam in the next step.
    • Diagram 1 Diagram 2
    • Check to see that the corner edges line up by folding the BKGD Fabric corner towards the seam so that the corner of Fabric B1 is exposed.
    • Fold the opposite corner of the BKGD Fabric square over and finger press in place. If the BKGD and Fabric B1 corners do not line up on the front and the back or if they are more than just slightly off, you may want to re-sew.
    • Check the opposite corner in the same manner.
    • Once edges on both corners have been checked, carefully trim 1/4" away from the seam.
    • Use an iron to press seam allowance toward the BKGD Fabric (10).
    • Diagram 3 Diagram 4 Diagram 5 Diagram 6
    • Repeat steps to sew remaining two BKGD Fabric squares to the Fabric B1 square in the same manner.
    • Use an iron to press seam allowances toward BKGD Fabric.
    • Diagram 7 Diagram 8
    • Use the remaining pieces from the Square in a Square bag to sew a total of five Square in a Square blocks and put aside.

  8. SEWING HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES:
    • Use pieces from the Half Square Triangle bag.
    • Replace zig-zag presser foot with a 1/4" presser foot for the remainder of the project.

  9. FABRIC B3/BKGD FABRIC HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES:
    • Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of each of the ten 3 3/8" BKGD Fabric squares.
    • Use the ruler and cutting mat grid technique to make sure your line is perfectly centered.
    • Gather six of the ten marked BKGD Fabric squares and the six 3 3/8" Fabric B3 squares.
    • Pair a marked BKGD Fabric square with a Fabric B3 square.
    • Pin both pieces together with corners lined up (RST) and sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
    • Carefully cut on the line.
    • Press seam allowance toward BKGD Fabric.
    • Trim tips. This will make two half square triangle units.
    • Use the remaining five BKGD Fabric squares gathered and five Fabric B3 squares to sew a total of 12 BKGD/Fabric B3 half square triangle units. Put aside.

    • Measure each of the five New Album blocks.
    • Note: The block size should be 10 1/2", but block sizes may vary from as small as 10 1/4" up to 10 5/8", depending on how accurate your 1/4" seam allowance is.
    • Write down the average measurement of your five blocks on your instruction sheet. You'll need that number later for future blocks and finishing steps.

  14. SEW A ROW OF NEW ALBUM BLOCKS A AND B:
    • When pinning blocks together, position Block A's so the last seams sewn (indicated with the dotted lines) will be horizontal. Position Block B's so the last seams sewn (indicated with the dotted lines) will be vertical. This way the seam allowances will nest together to make perfect points.
