PACKERS LAPQUILT - Squares

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 7/8yd main cotton fabric
  • 1/3yd each of 3 cotton prints or solids
  • 1/2yd fabric for binding
  • 1 3/8yd fabric for backing
  • 38"x 48" piece of batting
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

  1. 36"x 44" Quilt

  2. Read all instructions before cutting and sewing.
  3. Use accurate 1/4" seams.
  4. From main fabric cut 6 strips 4 1/2"x WOF. Subcut into 50 - 4 1/2" squares. Set aside.
  5. From each of the 3 remaining fabrics cut 2 strips 4 1/2"x WOF. Subcut to give you 17 - 4 1/2" squares of each fabric. Choose 49 of the squares to use.
  6. Sew squares into rows following Diagram 1 for placement of main fabric. Alternate 3 other fabrics in blank spots as shown.
  7. Press odd row seams to the right and even row seams to the left for easy nesting.
  8. Sew rows together in numerical order. Press.
  9. Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt as desired.
  10. Trim and bind quilt.

PATRIOTS LAPQUILT - Stripes

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/3yd each of 7 coordinating fabrics
  • 1 1/8yd solid fabric for strips and binding
  • 1 3/8yd fabric for backing
  • 38"x 48" piece of batting
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

  1. 36"x 44" Quilt

  2. Read all instructions before cutting and sewing.
  3. Use accurate 1/4" seams.
  4. Label your fabrics 1 to 7. Cut 2 strips from each 5 1/2"x WOF.
  5. From #1 cut (2) -3 1/2"x 5 1/2", (1)- 4 1/2"x 5 1/2", (1)-6 1/2"x 5 1/2" and (1)-9 1/2"x 5 1/2".
  6. From #2 cut (4)-3 1/2"x 5 1/2", and (1)-8 1/2"x 5 1/2".
  7. From #3 cut (1)-4 1/2"x 5 1/2", (1)-6 1/2"x 5 1/2", (3)-8 1/2"x 5 1/2", and (1)-10 1/2"x 5 1/2".
  8. From #4 cut (3)-4 1/2"x 5 1/2", (1)-9 1/2"x 5 1/2".
  9. From #5 cut (1)-4 1/2"x 5 1/2" (1)-5 1/2"x 5 1/2", (2)-6 1/2"x 5 1/2", and (2)-8 1/2"x 5 1/2".
  10. From #6 cut (1)-4 1/2"x 5 1/2", (1)-7 1/2"x 5 1/2", (2)-8 1/2"x 5 1/2", and (2)-9 1/2"x 5 1/2".
  11. From #7 cut (1)-4 1/2"x 5 1/2", (3)-7 1/2"x 5 1/2", and (2)-8 1/2"x 5 1/2".
  12. From solid fabric cut (4)-2 1/2"x WOF. Set aside for binding. Cut (6)-1 1/2"x WOF strips. These are the strips that go between your vertical rows. Depending on the width of fabric you may have to sew strips together for extra length.
  13. Cut (5)-1 1/2"x WOF. Subcut into (32)- 5 1/2"x 1 1/2" pieces.
  14. Use Diagram A for layout. Fabric number is circled. All pieces are 5 1/2" wide so sizes shown are the length of piece. Sew a 1 1/2"x 5 1/2" piece of solid between each piece.
  15. Press as you sew. Measure when sewn and pressed to ensure all strips are the same length. You will probably have to trim a little off the bottom on some strips to even up.
  16. Sew vertical rows to strips as shown in diagram. It will be more accurate to sew Row 1 and 2 to a strip, then Row 3 and 4 to a strip and Row 5 and 6 to a strip. Press well.
  17. Join the units with the remaining 2 strips. Press and trim if needed.
  18. Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt as desired.
  19. Trim and sew on binding.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use a lot of pins to join the vertical rows and strips. It will help not to stretch while sewing so your rows come out more even.

SEAHAWKS LAPQUILT - Triangles

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/3yd each of 6 cotton prints or solids
  • 1 3/8yd fabric for backing
  • 1/2yd fabric for binding
  • 38"x 48" piece of batting
  • Template plastic to make triangle template
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

  1. 36" x 44" Quilt

  2. Read all instructions before cutting and sewing.
  3. Use accurate 1/4" seams.
  4. Cut 2 strips 5 1/4"x WOF from each of the 6 - 1/3 yard pieces.
  5. Make a template from plastic following triangle pattern.
  6. Using template cut triangles from each of the strips so you have 21 triangles of each print/solid. You will have a total of 126 triangles.
  7. Sew triangles together in strips as shown in Diagram A. Make 9 strips of 14 triangles each.
  8. Press each triangle strip in opposite direction for easy nesting when sewing.
  9. Sew rows together.
  10. Trim sides as shown in Diagram B.
  11. Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt as desired.
  12. Trim and sew on binding.
