- Trace this shape onto the second wing piece, mirroring the piece. Cut out the shape.
- Lay the two pieces together, touching in the middle, on top of another piece of poster board. Trace the outer edges of the wing pieces to make one large piece. Cut out this shape from the second poster board to use as the back piece.
- Cut four more pieces of poster board to 9"x 14". Trace the top of the front wing piece and cut out the top. Cut to round off the edges of each piece. These will be used as the top wing layers.
- Place one of the larger wing pieces on top of the orange felt. Cut the felt 1/4" wider than the poster board. Hot glue the poster board to the felt. Place this piece on another piece of orange felt, sandwiching the poster board between the felt. Trace the shape, cut it out, and hot glue it to the other side of the wing. Repeat this for all of the larger wing pieces on orange felt. Then repeat this for all of the smaller wing pieces on blue felt.
- Cut 2" thick stripes from yellow felt and hot glue them to the front of the orange wings.
- Hot glue the blue wings to the top of the orange wings.
- Cut 2 pieces of yellow felt 2"x 14". Place them on the child’s shoulders, and mark where the front and back wings should be positioned. Hot glue these pieces to the back of the wings, to be used as straps to hold up the costume.
- Cut a piece of blue felt 2"x 5", and cut to round the short ends. Hot glue one end to the top of the blue front wing. Hot glue a 1" piece of Velcro to the other side, and the opposite side of the Velcro to the other wing.
- Using Pink, Light Pink, purple, and yellow felt add circles, lines, moons and other shapes to the wings to add interest and dimension to the wings. Play with layering and alternating colors.
HEADBAND:
- Wrap the end of a pipe cleaner around the head band an inch and a half from the center.
- Twist or curl the pipe cleaner to add interest and then trim to desired length.
- Insert the end into a foam ball and hot glue in place. Repeat to make another antenna 1 1/2" from the center in the other direction from the center and bend the same gluing a ball to the end.
- Paint the balls a coordinating color to the costume and allow to dry.
MASK:
- Using a Foam mask base cover in pink felt and round the outer edges to make circle eyes.
- Decorate the outside with stripes of felt and by layering colors to create depth and interest.

DIRECTIONS:
To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.BUG BODY:
- Cut out a winged shape piece of poster board 24" long x 10" wide using the front wing template as a guide. Once you have the shape trace it onto posterboard and cut out to create an identical front wings.
- Cut two back wing pieces out of poster board, filling the full sheet of poster board with one wing (approx. 31"x 18" at the longest/widest points). Once you have the shape trace it onto posterboard and cut out to create an identical back wings.
- Cut one last piece of poster board to 22" long x 14" wide using the body template as a guide.
- Overlap the back larger wings by 3-4 inches where they meet in the middle and hot glue in place. This will create the back wingspan. On the back side glue down a dowel rod across the middle of the wings running horizontal, then glue down the two half dowels from the middle of each wing starting at the bottom of the dowel running at a diagonal to the outer corner. (See template for visual). This will help make the wings rigid and keep them from curling.
- Place the back larger wing pieces on top of the blue felt. Cut the felt 1/4" wider than the poster board. Hot glue the poster board to the felt. Place this piece on another piece of blue felt, sandwiching the poster board between the felt. Trace the shape, cut it out, and hot glue it to the other side of the wing. Apply extra glue around the dowels when gluing to secure them into the felt and poster board and keep them from shifting. Then repeat this for the two smaller front wing pieces on light blue felt and the body piece on the tan felt.
- Using bright green, green, purple, blue and light blue felt add circles, lines, and other organic shapes to the wings to add interest and dimension. Play with layering and alternating colors.
- Hot glue the light blue front wings onto the body.
- Cut 2" thick stripes from green felt 2"x 14". Place them on the child’s shoulders, and mark where the front and back wings should be positioned. Hot glue these pieces to the front light blue wings and the back wing span to create straps. Leave one of the front straps NOT GLUED so that the costume can be easily pulled over the childs head. At this spot you will hot glue a velcro dot to the costume and the strap.
HEADBAND:
- Wrap the end of a pipe cleaner around the head band an inch and a half from the center.
- Twist or curl the pipe cleaner to add interest and then trim to desired length.
- Insert the end into a foam ball and hot glue in place.
- Repeat to make another antenna 1 1/2" from the center in the other direction from the center and bend the same gluing a ball to the end. Paint the balls a coordinating color to the costume and allow to dry.
MASK:
- Using a Foam mask base cover in light blue felt cutting into a butterfly shaped base for the mask.
