Beginner 1-2 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Upholstery Staple Remover
  • Staple Gun/Staples
  • Dust Cover Fabric (approximately 2/3yd)
  • Upholstery Fabric (approximately 1 1/2yd, depending on chair size)
  • Curved Upholstery Needle
  • Heavy Duty Thread in Matching Color

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use staple remover to remove existing fabric from chair. Begin where you can see staples first, which is usually on the bottom of the seat or the back of the chair back. Sometimes the chair back will be whip-stitched into place, in which case a seam ripper can be used in the stitches to remove the fabric.
  2. Remove the chair pieces from the frame of the chair if possible. Usually they are screwed into place.
  3. Retain any upholstery foam that is a part of the chair, unless it is old and degraded. Replace with new foam if needed.
  4. Use the removed pieces of fabric to cut out replacement fabric from the material you have chosen to use.
  5. Wrap the replacement fabric around the chair back and chair seat. Pull tightly and staple into place.
  6. After the chair back and chair seat are covered on the cushioned side, add the dust cover fabric to the underside of the seat cushion. Make sure to fold under the edges of the fabric, then simply staple near the edge of the fabric.
  7. For the back of the chair back, fold under the edges of the replacement fabric and use a curved upholstery needle to whip-stitch the fabric into place, hiding the staples from where you covered the cushion side of the back.
  8. Be sure to cut out any small holes in the fabric where the screw holes are in both the seat and the chair back.
  9. Replace the chair seat and chair back onto the frame using the existing chair hardware.
