SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 1yd cuts of Assorted Solid and Print Fabric, 18-21 (Amount varies based on dress size)
- 3yds of Background Fabric (Amount varies based on dress size)
- Omnigrid 3 1/2" Square Template
- Rotary Cutter
- Ruler
- Cutting Mat
- Basic Sewing Supplies
- Iron and Pressing Surface
- Sewing Machine
- McCalls M8090 Pattern or Pattern of Choice
DIRECTIONS:
To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.- Open sewing pattern and identify the pieces that will need to be cut out.
- On a flat surface, lay patterns out, taking into account pieces that will need to be cut on the fold or cut multiple times.
- Use the physical patterns to determine how much patchwork fabric you need to make.
- These instructions are for a 9" finished block. Based on the amount of fabric you need, adjust the number of total blocks.
- Use the following instructions to make the Ohio tar quilt block. Repeat until you have enough blocks to make a fabric panel large enough for all sewing pattern pieces.
- From light background fabric cut one 4 3/4" square.
- From medium fabric cut one 4 3/4" square and four 3 1/2" squares.
- From dark fabric cut two 4 3/4" squares.
- Layer the 4 3/4" squares as shown in Diagram A:
- Light on top of dark and medium on top of dark. Draw a line diagonally on each top square. Stitch 1/4" down each side of the line. Cut apart at the line and press seams open. You will have 4-half square triangles.
- Follow Diagram B and line up the half square triangles so the seams nest into each other and the fabric colors are opposite each other. Draw a diagonal line from the opposite corners of the sewn line. Stitch 1/4" down each side of the line. Cut apart at the line and press seams open. You will have 4-quarter square triangles. Using the template trim to 3 1/2" square being sure the center mark is at the intersection.
- Follow the layout to stitch in rows. Press your seams and stitch rows together to form the block.
- Cut sewing patterns from the patchwork panel. For cut on fold pieces it is helpful to trace the pattern onto a separate piece of paper mirrored, so that the pattern can be cut flat.
- For facings, yokes and collars, use the solid background fabric.
- Assemble the garment following the directions in the sewing pattern.

Great Stash Buster Idea!
I have so many "scraps" and leftovers that are between 1/4 and 1/2 yard, and they coordinate and contrast well with each other. I'm going to make the patchwork fabric as I bust through my stash of Keepsake Calico and Kona cotton. Very clever idea, and it has inspired me to get great use from fabric that isn't big enough to make a whole project, but is enough to put together with others to make something adorable! *Hint* Budget friendly way to make this is to catch the McCall's patterns on a doorbuster sale and hit up the remnants bin, which happens to be my favorite section at JoAnn!

No dress pattern
I would like to purchase the materials for this dress. I see the link to the Ohio Star Pattern and how to put it together. However, I don't see any way to access the dress pattern so I really can't do anything with this great idea.
