Beginner Under 1 Hour

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • White pillowcase (Must Contain Less Than 40% Polyester)
  • Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye: Teal or Your Favorite Color
  • Container for dyeing
  • Rubber gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic table cover
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoon
  • Salt
  • Liquid dish detergent
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative (Recommended)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Pre-wash pillowcase in warm, soapy water. This helps to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.
  2. Cover table with plastic and gather your supplies.
  3. Fill a plastic container or stainless-steel sink with 1 1/2 gallons of hot water. The water should ideally be 140ºF. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and add to the dyebath.
  4. To enhance the color, add one cup of salt. Add 1 teaspoon of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing.
  5. Wearing rubber gloves, add 2oz of well-shaken All-Purpose Teal dye to the container. Stir well.
  6. Wet pillowcase.
  7. Dip a quarter of the pillowcase into the dyebath. Move the pillowcase slowly up and down and back and forth. Let the bottom of the pillowcase remain in the dyebath longer than the top. Continue dipping the pillowcase until you are satisfied with the color. This may take 5-10 minutes.
  8. Remove, squeeze out excess dye and rinse in cool water until the water runs
  9. We strongly recommend using Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing. It enhances the color, increases color retention and prevents dye from bleeding into white areas. Follow package instructions for the spray method.
  10. Rinse in cool water until rinse water begins to run clear.
  11. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.
