To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.

NOTE: Sew using 3/8" seam allowance.
  1. Cut out backrest using the patterns: one front, one back, one bottom, two side arms, two top arm straight pieces, and one handle.
  2. Fold handle in half lengthwise, press. Open and fold each long side into center and press. Fold again for a strip about 1 1/4" wide. Top stitch along each side about 1/4" in from folded edge.
  3. Mark the center of the top front piece. Center handle 2 1/2" from each side of this mark and stay stitch in place.
  4. Sew the straight top arm piece to the curved edge of the side arm piece. Clip into straight piece to fit where needed around curved part of arm.
  5. Sew these arm sections to the bottom corners of the front. Clip arm section where necessary to fit into curved sections.
  6. Match the pieced front to the back with right sides together. Sew along the arms, sides and top.
  7. Turn backrest inside out. Match the bottom piece to the open end of the pillow, right sides together. Pin well.
  8. Sew around the bottom, leaving several inches along the bottom back seam for turning and filling.
  9. Clip curves and turn right side out.
  10. Fill with bean bag filler until pillow reaches desired firmness. Whip stitch opening closed.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Sew a zipper into the bottom back seam to make a removeable cover. Sew a second pillow, with not handle, out of muslin to use for the inner cushion.
