NOTE: You will use 6 bags for each snowflake.
Use the templates provided or create your own.
  1. Trace the pattern onto each of the six bags.
  2. Cut out the design using scissors or a blade.
  3. Do NOT cut through the centerline of the paper bag.
  4. Add 3-4 cups of water to the large bowl.
  5. Add a varied amount of dye, depending on how dark you would like the paper to be.
  6. Dip each of the cut paper bags into the dye, only holding them in the solution for 10-15 seconds at a time.
  7. Lay each bag out on some newspaper or a towel to dry.
  8. You can dip the bags again for additional dye patterns or a darker shade, allowing to dry completely between dips.
  9. Once bags are dyed and dry.
  10. Lay one bag on a flat surface, bottom facing down.
  11. Run a line of hot glue across the very bottom of the bag.
  12. Glue another bag, also bottom facing down on top of the first bag.
  13. Once glue is hardened, lift up the top bag and add a line of hot glue to the center line, from the bottom to the very top.
  14. Continue these steps with the other bags.
  15. Once all six have been glued to each other, gently open the bags.
  16. Glue the final two bags to each other to create a round snowflake.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Cut the first bag and use that as your guide to cut the other bags.
  • Let the bags dry completely between dips. The paper becomes brittle as it soaks up the water and dye.
  • You can use a paintbrush to add additional dye detail to the paper snowflakes.
