DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  1. Quantity of cardstock will vary depending on size planter cover and pattern created: 8" H x 6" D planter 3-5 sheets, 12" H x 10" D planter 4-6 sheets.
  2. Top edge trim, cut 1: L = circumference of circle template plus 1" x 6" H (4 1/4" will run inside of planter cover). If circumference is longer than 24" overlap short ends of cardstock by 1/2". Glue together. With a pencil, mark wrong side 3/4" and 1 3/4" from one long edge. If heavy weight cardstock is used, press with pencil when marking to ensure crisp fold. Fold wrong side together on 3/4" mark. Fold again wrong side together on 1 3/4" mark. Crease folds well with the back of a spoon. Set aside.
  3. Side panel, heavy weight cardstock, cut 1: L= circumference of circle template plus 1" x H of planter. If circumference is longer than 24" overlap short ends of cardstock by 1/2". If height is greater than 12" overlap long edges of cardstock by 1/2" (cardstock may be run vertical, 24" H and overlap on long edges). Glue together. On right side of panel mark a line 1" from left side. The 1" area will be covered when the side panel is glued into a tube (right side will overlap to create the back seam).
  4. Determine pattern: Lay side panel on a flat surface. Cut a variety of widths of diagonal strips of paper. If using a patterned paper determine diagonal that runs in concert with direction of print. Overlap strips to create a pattern. Run pattern from the top edge to the bottom edge of side panel. Consider that if a strip of paper crosses over either the left side 1" mark or the right side of the side panel, the pattern may dead end at the back seam. Patterns may be continued past the seam either by measuring from the bottom edge of side for accurate alignment or after the planter is fully constructed. Stop paper layers at the 1" left side mark. Use light pencil marks to place registration marks for paper strips on side panel. Glue paper in place.
  5. Cut one flange strip for bottom edge of side panel. Length is the same as side panel. See flange template. Repeat pattern of template the length of flange strip. Glue straight edge of flange strip to back of the bottom edge of side panel. Line up bottom edge of side at fold line on flange strip. Let set. Fold flanges away from front of side panel.
  6. Glue top edge trim to side panel top. Apply glue to 4 1/4" height of right side of top edge trim. Lay side panel right side up on top. Match top edge of side panel with pencil mark 1 3/4" from edge of top edge trim. Fold top edge trim over right side of side panel. Glue in place leaving 2" from the left side without glue. Let set.
  7. Glue side panel into a tube. Gently bend side panel to a curve. For tighter curves, place the right side of the side panel on a flat surface. With a hand on the top trim, slowly bend the side to curve. Overlap the side edges to the 1" mark to dry fit. The unglued 2" of top trim should overlap the glued end of top trim. Glue in place. Let set.
  8. Bottom of planter cover: Cut cardboard circle to just inside circumference + 1". Cut two circles of cardstock same size as cardboard (one for inside and one for outside of planter cover. Glue inside panel on one side of cardboard.
  9. Through the top of the planter tube slide cardboard, cardstock side up. Level cardboard with folds at flanges. Glue flanges to cardboard. Glue bottom cardstock over flanges, onto cardboard.
  10. Erase any visible pencil lines.
  11. Paper is washable but care should be taken when watering plants. Paper may break down if water escapes plant pot.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Spray adhesive may be used to adhere layers of paper as the design on the side panel. Quick Hold should be used to adhere top trim, back seam and bottom flanges.
  • Weights are recommended to hold pressure on top edge trim as the adhesive sets. Clothespins may be helpful to hold the top and bottom of the side panel together while pressing the back seam together.
