SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Flannel Shirt
  • Cotton
  • Tracing Paper
  • Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Dye
  • Dye Pot
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Chalk
  • Studs

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Wash and dry your flannel shirt and your cotton to remove any finishes and to preshrink the cotton.
  2. Use tracing paper to trace the shape of the shirt anywhere you'd like to put a cloth patch. Add an additional 1/2" to each edge for a hem.
  3. Use your tracing paper piece to cut your cotton.
  4. Fold the edges in 1/2" and press with an iron. For curved edges, use the heat of the iron to relax the cotton fibers into the curved shape and press to crease. This is best done with small bits of the curve at a time, starting with the most relaxed part of the curve and moving into the tighter part of the curve.
  5. Use the longest stitch on your sewing machine to baste the edges in place.
  6. Pin cotton piece in place on shirt, and sew on with about 1/4" seam allowance.
  7. Repeat for all cotton pieces.
  8. Mix your dye bath per dye instructions; test dye color and saturation on cotton scraps. When ready, dip bottom of flannel into the dye bath for your determined amount of time. Bring it over to the sink to wash the dye out with hot water then cold water until the water runs clear. Ring out the extra water and then dip the top of the flannel into the dye bath; hold and then rinse as before.
  9. Allow to dry completely.
  10. Use chalk and a ruler to mark the placement of your studs.
  11. Push the prongs of the stud through the flannel. On the inside of the flannel, bend the prongs inward to secure the stud. You can use needle nose pliers to bend the prongs, or even just a flathead screwdriver. Repeat for all studs.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Add black dye or another darker color to the dye bath and dip the bottom edge of the flannel again to add another layer of dimension to the dip dye.
