SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Baseball cap
  • Scraps of Cotton Prints with Specific Designs to Cut Out for the Patches
  • 1/4yd Shape-Flex® - Cotton Woven Interfacing
  • Ultra Solvy - Heavy Washaway Stabilizer
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Air Erasable Marker
  • Small Ruler
  • Fabri-Tac - Fabric Glue
  • Black Embroidery Thread
  • Black All-Purpose Thread for Bobbin
  • Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron and Pressing Surface
  • Bowl of Water

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Decide which designs will be made into patches and cut them out of the fabric at least an inch larger than the design all around.
  2. Cut two pieces of the Shape-Flex interfacing the same size and fuse them, one on top of the other to the back of the patch fabric.
  3. Using the fabric marker, draw around the printed patch design at least 1/4" away from the design. The marked shape will be the size and shape of the finished patch. When the shape and size feel right, cut out the patch following the drawn line.
  4. Set the machine up for the satin stitch with embroidery thread on top and all-purpose thread in the bobbin. Loosen the top tension slightly.
  5. Cut a square of the Ultra Solvy at least an inch larger all around than the patch. Center the patch right side up on the Ultra Solvy. Sew a satin stitch all around the patch with the left swing of the stitch near the edge of the fabric patch and the right swing of the stitch just off the edge of the patch. The Ultra-Solvy will support the stitch off the edge of the fabric. After stitching all around cut the excess Ultra Solvy off and soak the patch in a bowl of water to dissolve the Ultra Solvy. The water may need to be changed several times to get the stabilizer residue out of the patches.
  6. Allow the patches to dry. Press the patches then glue them to the hat.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Before gluing the patches on the hat, place them on the hat moving them around to determine placement.
