OVEN MITT

NOTE: Use a 1/4" seam allowance.
  1. Print out the pattern (2 pages) and tape together. Cut out.
  2. Stitch together the front patchwork rectangular pieces using the pattern. Start by sewing the right sides together: B to C, then stitching this to A.
  3. Next sew RTS, D to E followed by stitching this to the B/C/A piece. Press.
  4. Lay the oven mitt pattern piece on top of the patchwork, trace and cut out. Pay attention to where the seams lay to make sure they are lined up with the pattern.
  5. Use the pattern to trace and cut out (1) backing piece. Make sure to flip the pattern upside down before tracing.
  6. On your 2 uncut 16" x 11" insulate pieces, lay out and pin the patchwork mitt front and back pieces on each. Quilt straight horizontal lines on both approx. every inch. Cut off excess.
  7. With RST, sew mitt front to back, (leaving the bottom open), clip curves and turn right side out.
  8. With RST, sew mitt lining front to back, clip curves.
  9. Slide lining into mitt, making top edges even. Pin.
  10. Use purchased or sewn binding to cover the exposed edges and stitch together in place.
  11. Cut a 6" piece of binding for the hanger. Top stitch on both edges.
  12. Fold in half and stitch into place on the inner edge of the mitt.

POTHOLDER

NOTE: Use a 1/4" seam allowance.
  1. Print out the pattern (it should fit onto a 11.5" x 8" piece of printer paper). Cut out.
  2. Stitch together the front pocket patchwork pieces using the pattern. Start by sewing the right sides together: A to B, then stitching this to C.
  3. Next sew RTS, D to E followed by stitching this to the A/B/C piece. Press.
  4. Lay the potholder pattern on top of the patchwork, trace and cut out. Make sure to pay attention to the dashed pocket line. This will be the top of the patchwork.
  5. Use the pattern to cut out the inner back piece.
  6. Layer the smaller insulate piece between the patchwork front and rectangular lining piece, pin and quilt. Quilt horizontal lines approx. every 3/4". Cut off excess fabric.
  7. Layer the larger insulate piece between the pattern cut inner piece and outer (11.5" x 9") back fabric, pin and quilt. Quilt horizontal lines approx. every 1/4". Cut off excess fabric.
  8. Use purchased or sewn binding to run across the top edge of the pocket. Stitch in place.
  9. Pin pocket to one side of the potholder, having bottom edge even, baste.
  10. Sew binding around the outside of the potholder, folding under end to finish.
  11. Cut a 6" piece of binding for the hanger. Topstitch on both edges.
  12. Fold in half and stitch to the center top of the potholder.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When you are stitching the mitt front and back together, square off your stitches at the point where the fingers meet the thumb. This will leave more room to add notches and allow the thumb piece to move more freely.
