  • Contrast A Black (00226) 1 ball
  • Contrast B Aran (00202) 1 ball
  • Sizes U.S. 6 (4 mm) and U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needles 16” [40.5 cm] long. Set of four size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Stitch marker.

One size to fit average woman's head.

GAUGE

20 sts and 26 rows = 4” [10 cm] in stocking stitch with larger needles.

Directions

With smaller circular needle and A, cast on 96 sts. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st. 1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around. Rep last rnd of (K2. P2) ribbing for 2” [5 cm]. Next rnd: *M1. K8. Rep from * to last 4 sts. M1. K4. 104 sts. Change to larger circular needle and proceed as follows: 1st rnd: Knit 1st row of Chart I, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 13 times. Chart I is now in position. Cont working Chart I, until 8 rows of Chart I have been worked 4 times. Next rnd: With B only, K6. K2tog. *K4. K2tog. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K6. 88 sts. Beg working Chart II, reading rows from right to left, noting 8-st rep will be worked 11 times, until 4 rows of Chart II have been completed. Next rnd: With B only, K6. *K2tog. K3. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 72 sts. Work Chart II, noting 8-st rep will be worked 9 times, until 4 rows of Chart II have been completed. Change to double-pointed needles. Next rnd: With B only, K5. *K2tog. K2. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K3. 56 sts. Work Chart II, noting 8-st rep will be worked 7 times, until 4 rows of Chart II have been completed. Break A. Next rnd: With B only, K5. *K2tog. K1. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K3. 40 sts. Next rnd: *K4. K2tog. Rep from * around. 32 sts. Next rnd: *K3. K2tog. Rep from * around. 24 sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.

 

Pompom (optional) Wind A around 4 fingers approx 100 times. Tie tightly in the middle and leave a long end for attaching to Hat. Cut loops at both ends and trim to smooth round shape. Sew securely to top of Hat.
