SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Liquitex Acrylic Paint, Titanium White
  • Liquitex Acrylic Paint, Phthalocyanine Blue
  • Liquitex Acrylic Paint, Ultramarine Blue
  • Liquitex Acrylic Paint, Cadmium Red Deep Hue
  • Liquitex Acrylic Paint, Mars Black
  • 5"x5" Deep Edge Canvas (pre-primed)
  • Large Plastic Comb
  • Liquitex Size 16 Freestyle Small Painting Knife
  • Palette Paper
  • Paper Towels
  • Paper or Plastic (to protect work surface)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Protect work surface with plastic or paper (recommended) and assemble supplies and tools.
  2. Squeeze out about 2 teaspoons of Ultramarine blue and mix it with about 1 pea sized amount of Mars Black to create a navy blue.
  3. Next, squeeze out about 2 teaspoons of Titanium White and mix it with a small pea sized amount of Phthalo Blue to create the light blue.
  4. Use the palette knife to scoop up the navy blue mix and dab it left to right on the top fifth of the canvas.
  5. Take the Titanium White tube and squeeze out several thick dabs onto the canvas underneath the navy blue.
  6. Then, use the palette knife to dab on several thick dabs of the light blue mixture, underneath the white. This will be approximately in the middle of the canvas.
  7. Take the Titanium White tube and add thick dabs underneath the light blue dabs.
  8. For the last fifth of the canvas, squeeze out several thick dabs of the Cadmium Red Deep hue.
  9. Then, take the comb and rest it on the far-left side of the canvas, bristles down. If you're left-handed, place the comb on the far-right side of the canvas.
  10. Next, drag and slowly zig zag the comb up and down as you rake the color across the canvas.
  11. Once you reach the opposite side, carefully pick up the comb, and place it down on the side where you began the first comb drag.
  12. Repeat the drag and slow zig zag step. The colors will begin to blend a bit more on the second comb zig zag pass across the canvas.
  13. The project can be finished after the second pass or more combing can be done if desired.
  14. Be careful not to do too many passes or the color will become too mixed and muddied.
  15. Allow the painting to dry.
