Easy to use and love the results!I love this firm stabilizer! I had never used it before, but bag pattern called for it. I was worried that it would make the fabric too stiff and would be difficult to sew. It really wasn't hard to use. It gave the bag definition and stability, but not is a stiff or ridged way. It was easy to use and i love how my bag turned out. I will definitely use this again.

Pellon 71F Peltex Ultra Firm StabilizerThis product works extremely well when used according to the directions. I use it when making clutch purses as well as wallets. I say use as directed because I thought that I could use it the way I had wanted to and I needed to slow down and follow how it was directed to be used.

Perfect for a firm resultThis Pellon is exactly what you need to make a free standing fabric bag. You must follow the directions and use a damp cloth, pressing for the 15 seconds. Be careful your fabric has no wrinkles before you begin. I have had great results with this.

Easy to use, great results!I purchased this to make fabric storage totes/bons for my bathroom. It is easy to cut and it bonds very well. It made the sides and bottom of the bins crisp edged and sturdy. I bonded it with the damp cloth as per instructions and it worked wonderfully. This is a very stiff interfacing and turning the project can be tricky. If I make them again I will modify the construction to avoid turning. It wasvery easy to use and great results.

Heavyweight HoldI love this ultra firm Peltex. I make structured bags that need to hold their shape and stand up to the abuse of daily life. This product does the trick. I'd love for it to be a little cheaper but - you get what you pay for!

New bonding systemI have frequently purchased this product and today I purchased a yard from my local Joann's. To my surprise when I got it home the backside had a metallic look to it similar to Insulbright and not the glue dots I've been accustomed to. Almost certain I had purchased the sew in version I reviewed my receipt and it did say peltex 71F so I decided to try it out and see if it would actually fuse to my fabrics. It does however I don't feel like it bonded as well as the prior version with the "glue dots". Just a heads up if you purchase this product on a frequent basis.

Great for totes and handbagsI make totes and handbags from old blue jeans and use the Peltex on the bottoms. It fuses well, does not shift, is washable and provides a stable base for the bags. I no longer have to use removable plastic or craftboard that has to be encased in fabric.

Contradictory Application InstructionsThe application video shown here for this product contradicts the application instructions that actually come with the Peltex 71 one-sided fusible, which instructions state to use a 'hot steam iron at wool setting. Use a gliding motion and slight pressure to iron Peltex 71 F to fabric'. The second step in the instructions then say to 'cover with a damp press cloth and press firmly for 10-15 seconds. Then in bold font it states to 'ALWAYS USE A DAMP PRESS CLOTH AND PRESS DOWN FIRMLY.' The last step states to 'Repeat lifting and overlapping until all fabric is fused. Remove press cloth and iron fabric to eliminate excess moisture.'
I make fabric handbags, usually with cotton fabric which this Peltex 71 fuses to very well, when applied as per the instructions that come with it, using a press cloth and a STEAM iron on wool settings. Because I want my handbags to be machine washable, I did a test run on a 8" x 10" piece of cotton fabric fused with this Peltex 71 and ran it through the washer and dryer on normal settings in hot water to see if the Peltex would STAY fused to the fabric. I washed and dried this sample piece 3 times and the Peltex firmly stayed put. I was very impressed with its adhesion capabilities through repeated washings.
However, when sewing two layers of fabric with Peltex fused to the back, by putting the right sides of the fabric together, the Peltex fuzzy side is down and does not slide very easily across your pressure plate. I've found using regular tissue paper placed underneath makes it much easier to slide the Peltex fused fabric across your pressure plate as you sew and then just tear it away afterwards. The needle goes through these two layers of it just fine though, no problem there.
The other issue I had with it is both a pro and a con. It is very stiff, doesn't DISTORT and holds its shape well in the finished sewn project which is a big plus. But this also means you cannot press your seams open. Even with a steam setting, you can't get that seam allowance to stay pressed open or closed, because the Peltex fused fabric would be bending back on itself and it just won't do that. The only thing that works for getting a really nice flat seam is gluing those seam allowances one way or the other, open or closed. Fabric glue works but its a little messy. 'Wonder Tape' works really well for this.
Even though Peltex 71 has its little quirks, once you've used it and see what they are and how to work around them, you'll love it. The secret to being happy with the final results is making sure it is fused onto the fabric really well first.
