DIRECTIONS:
  1. Make patterns for individual states. Cut a piece of paper to 1" larger than interior size of a state. Tape the paper centered over the state. Make a rubbing of the border of the state. Gently rub over the border with a grease pencil, crayon or graphite pencil. Rub perpendicular to the border to ensure that the inside edge of the border is clear on the rubbing. Use a ruler to mark lines, on the paper, that run perpendicular and parallel to the sides of the frame. These will be used to ensure that the image that will be inserted in the state sets level to the frame of the map. Remove the paper from the map. Use an x-Acto knife to cut along the interior border on the paper. Use the paper outline of state as a picture frame around image to be inserted in state. Print image for state larger than paper frame. Center image in picture frame lining up vertical and horizontal image parts with markings on paper frame. Tape paper frame to image. Use an x-Acto knife to cut image along frame border. Use a pencil to lightly mark the state name on the back of the image. Repeat. Set aside.
  2. The frame and the raised borders of the states will remain untreated. Paint flat areas inside states with a variety of blue paints. Paint all the negative space around the map a dark blue. Use a flat brush to apply paint to large areas. Use a long hair small round brush to paint in small areas. Apply two to three coats for even coverage. If paint is bumped onto the state borders use a toothpick to immediately remove the bulk of the paint. Brown touch up paint may be applied to the sides of the raised wood when all flat areas are painted. Let dry. The top of the raised areas may be lightly sanded to remove any unwanted paint residue.
  3. Insert images into states. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the flat interior of a state. Immediately press the corresponding image flat into the state. Press down irregular edges with the blunt end of a toothpick. Let dry.
  4. Polaroid like images: Print images to 1" x 1". Cut a frame from Cardstock. On the back of Cardstock draw a rectangle 1 1/4" x 1 1/2". Mark lines 1/8" inside rectangle on three adjacent sides. Mark a line 3/8" in from fourth side (bottom of frame). The inner rectangle should be 1" x 1", to accommodate the image. Use an x-Acto knife and ruler to cut the opening first then cut the outer edges of the frame. Test fit the frame onto the image. Place the widest side of the frame below the bottom edge of the image. Mark registration marks onto the image at two of the corners of the frame. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the back of the frame. Immediately apply the frame to the image. Let dry. Cut excess image paper to match outer edge of frame.
  5. Attach the Polaroid like image to the map. Locate the image close to the state location of the image. Place painters' tape onto the map, next to two sides of the image, to act as registration marks. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the back of the image. Press the image in place.
  6. Add strings to connect Polaroid like images to state represented. Tie one overhand knot at the end of string. Place one upholstery tack through knot. Hold tack point close to area of state represented in image. Pull string taut to one upper corner of image frame. Tie another overhand knot at that point. Insert a tack through the knot. Trim the ends of string close to the knots. Apply a small amount of Quick Grip adhesive to the underside of the knots and the cut ends of the string. Make sure that the knot sets as close as possible to the back of the head of the tack. Let dry. Use a hammer to tap the tacks to the map. Hold the tacks with a needle nose pliers to ensure accuracy in placement of tack. Tap tack gently with a hammer. Check to make sure that the tack does not protrude from the back of the map.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Also add a layer of Mod Podge over all images attached to the map. Apply a thin coat using cross hatch brush strokes. This will add a layer of protection to the images and make them easy to clean.
