- Use 1/2" seam allowance unless noted otherwise.
- Create patchwork fabric using a mixture of fabrics large enough to be used for both front and back pieces of case, pressing as you go to keep seams flat.
- Attach a solid piece of cotton duck fabric for contrast at the bottom of the front piece of patchwork fabric.
- Sandwich quilt batting between patchwork fabric and solid lining fabric.
- Quilt 2" squares or pattern of your choice.
- Cut out front and back pieces of case pattern once the quilting has been completed.
- Cut two pieces of print fabric and 2 pieces of lining fabric 38"x 3 1/4" to attach to zipper.
- Sew zipper using a zipper foot by sandwiching the zipper between the print and lining fabric.
- Topstitch close to seam near zipper.
- Fold over ends of fabric and stitch to finish.
- Measure 4" from top of bag and begin to sew front piece to one side of the zipper print piece to bag with right sides together, fold lining pieces over seam and finish by topstitching along edge.
- Cut one piece of print fabric and one of lining fabric 6"x 90" for side of case (this can be pieced together).
- With right sides together, sandwich the top patchwork piece to print fabric and the lining fabric to the lining.
- At bottom of zipper, pin and sew right sides of side fabric together to make a clean seam.
- Fold fabric over and overlap approximately 1" at the bottom of the zipper and pin side fabric to the front and sew together, turn and press the fabric away from the patchwork fabric, (You may need to trim the end of the fabric when you get around the bag to shorten the side piece.) overlap the end to cover the zipper by 1".
- Make sure you finish the end by folding under approximately 2" and stitching.
- Topstitch 1/4" from edge of seam on the side piece.
- Pin right side of the other side of the print fabric with the zipper to the right side of the back piece of the case and sew to attach the side to the back piece.
- Fold lining over seam and topstitch 1/4" from edge of seam (on the outside) on the side piece, catching the unfinished seam as you sew.
- Cut a 4"x 130" piece of flex foam to help provide a sturdy side to the case (you can piece this together using a zigzag stitch).
- Cut 10"x 130" piece of fabric to encase the flex foam (you can piece this together by sewing right sides together and pressing seams).
- Fold under and press on the long side 1/2" to make a finished edge.
- Wrap fabric around flex foam overlapping the long edges on the back side and sewing down the center of the foam to attach the fabric to the foam.
- Pin and hand sew the flex foam around the inside edge of the case to provide stability.
- At the zippered edge, sew the foam along the bottom edge only so that you can place the guitar in the case.
- The foam piece should be shortened to allow for easier access to the case, it should not be attached to make one piece.
- For handle: cut a piece of "quilted fabric" 5"x 10" and sew right sides together, turn right side out and press in ends to finish.
- Attach on the zippered side of the bag, making sure you have enough room for a hand to fit under the handle.
JOANN HACKS:
- Begin quilting at the center of the piece of fabric to help prevent wrinkles in the fabric.
