SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Butterick 5616
- Use fabric amount stated on pattern
- Lining: 3/4 less than stated on pattern
- 3/4 yd of lining for sleeves
- 1/2 yd fusible interfacing
- Kraft paper
- Sewing supplies
DIRECTIONS:
NOTE: Use 5/8" seam on pattern.- Remove the center front fold over that is used for an interfacing, leaving a 5/8" seam allowance (Sherpa will not take all that thickness for buttonholes).
- Trace sleeve onto Kraft paper. Measure your full length of sleeve. Add the remainder measurements to the sleeve length.
- Sew the collar, front and back seams and back sleeve seam with wrong sides together exposing the raw edges. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4".
- Sew the under arm and sleeve under arm sleeve seam with right sides together like a normal a seam.
- Steam do not press the fusible interfacing to center front, lower band and sleeve cuff.
- Sew lining as normal seams and serge. Serging the lining seams keeps the bulk to a minimum.
- Sew the collar to neckline. Connect the lining to the jacket, sewing the center front, collar then down the other center front.
- Sew the lower band to jacket and sleeves per instructions.
- If buttonholes are a problem for the sewing machine, sew a rectangle the size of button.
JOANN HACKS:
- When pressing fusible interfacing, steam is better than heat. When steaming, if sherpa gets matted brush to pile up. Test a sample scrap first.
- Use #14 sewing needle when sewing sherpa fabric.
- Sew under arm seams of the jacket and sleeve underarm seam like a normal seam so that the sherpa will not fray with rubbing of the underarm and under arm seam.
