DIRECTIONS:

  1. Directions for random patchwork curtain with top and bottom border. Image curtain finished size 96" H x 102" W. Two of the pictured fabrics are good one side. Random patchwork interior panel 80" H x 102" W. Measurements may be adjusted to any size curtain.
  2. 1/2" Seams: The look of a flat felled seam. Layer two panels wrong sides together. Shift edges to be sewn together so top panel sets back 1/2" from edge of bottom panel. Sew 3/4" from edge. Open out panels. Press from the back laying the bottom panel flat (3/4" seam allowance flat). This will fold the 1/4" edge of top panel. Flip to right sides up. Tuck 3/4" seam allowance behind 1/4" seam allowance to seam. Press. Topstitch close to edge. Press.
  3. All interior patchwork constructed from 6" W and 7" wide strips of fabric cut to full width of fabric and 12" x 12" and 13" x 13" squares. Sew strips together at short ends alternating fabric choices using 1/2" seams directions. Cut the long strips to shorter lengths and pair with squares or other strips. When adding panels together create squares or rectangles squaring each as completed. Cut away any excess fabric that extends beyond a square or rectangle. Make each patchwork panel smaller than half of width and height of interior panel. This will allow the panels to be rotated to desired pattern. Place a variety of patterns of squares and rectangles on a flat surface. Sew one side of panel to another then square panel.
  4. 6" TOP BORDER WITH 3" ROD CHANNEL: Cut two panels 10" H x 55" L. Seam short ends together (1/2" seams directions) to create one panel 10" H x 110" L. Measure 52 1/2" from center of seam. Cut off ends to a finished 104" L. Fold both short ends back 1/2" then 1/2" again. Press. Topstitch close to the edge. Fold one long edge back 1/2". Press. Fold same long edge back 3" (curtain rod channel). Press. Double topstitch at bottom edge of channel. Attach to interior patchwork panel. Lay border wrong sides together. Lay top edge of interior panel right sides up 1/2" back from raw edge of border. Sew and press same as interior panels.
  5. FORMULA FOR TOP BORDER: height of desired border + 1/2" to attach to interior patchwork + height of desired rod channel + 1/2" hem at back/bottom of channel.
  6. 10" BOTTOM BORDER: Seam together panels (same as top panel) to create one panel 13" H x 104" long. Fold both short ends back 1/2" then 1/2" again. Press. Topstitch close to the edge. Fold one long edge back 1/2". Press. Fold same long edge back 2". Press. Topstitch close to edge. Attach to interior patchwork panel same as top border.
  7. FORMULA FOR BOTTOM BORDER: height of desired border + 1/2" to attach to interior patchwork + 2" hem + 1/2" fold at back raw edge of hem.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Place painter's tape on the bed of sewing machine at 3/4" from needle. Keep the edge of the stacked patches at the tape line when sewing the seam.
  • When pinning and pressing seams make sure that all previous seams run perpendicular and/or parallel to the new seams.
