DIRECTIONS:
- Prepare pattern: Shorten inner leg of shorts front and back by 1 1/2". Draw a line from the notch, parallel to the lengthen/shorten line, across the leg and fold up 3/4". Shoulder strap will be extended and sewn to the outside of the top. Draw placement lines for the strap on pattern pieces 1 and 2, parallel to the front or back center fold, from the placement circles to the bottom edge. Extend the length of shoulder strap pattern at each end, using the length from the placement line from the circles to the waistline. Large and small dots will still match the dots on the bodice.
- Ruffles: Ruffles will be cut 5" wide crosswise from the contrasting fabric. Cut 2 pieces twice the length of the shoulder strap and 2 pieces twice the length of the bottom edge of the leg. Measure the edge in step 29.
- Top: Cut pieces 1, 2, 5, 6 from main fabric. Cut extended shoulder strap piece 3. Transfer markings. Follow step 1 and steps 11-14 without inserting straps. Fold shoulder strap ruffle wrong sides together and gather the long raw edge. Pin to right side of shoulder strap, matching raw edges, adjust gathers and sew 5/8" seam. Trim 1/4" from seam allowance of ruffle. Fold other long edge 5/8" and place along ruffle seam. Baste 1/4" from fold. With ruffles toward outside, pin strap to top along placement lines, matching symbols on strap and upper edges of bodice. Sew 1/8" along both sides of strap in one continuous seam. Baste bottom edge of ruffle neatly to bottom edge of top. Remove basting from strap.
- Shorts: Complete steps 28-30. Cut ruffle twice the bottom leg measurement. Sew short ends of ruffle, right sides together. Fold ruffle in half lengthwise, forming a circle and press. Gather and pin to leg, placing ruffle seam at inseam. Adjust and sew 5/8" from edge. Sew again 1/4" away from first stitching. Trim 1/4" from seam allowance and press seam toward shorts. On outside, edgestitch shorts 1/8" from ruffle seam.
- Optional Bow: Cut piece 8 crosswise from contrasting material and follow steps 43-45.
JOANN HACKS:
- If using knit material, use a stretch or jersey sewing machine needle to prevent skipped stitches.
- When gathering, sew two rows, using a 4mm stitch length and lowering the needle tension. Use a different color thread in the bobbin and pull the bobbin thread to gather.
- For even ruffles, divide the garment and the ruffle in quarters, pin together and adjust the gathers.
