Beginner 1-2 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 1/4yds POP! knit fabric
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter & cutting mat
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Lay out the knit fabric making sure the selvages are matched up.
  2. A strip 120"x 12 1/2" is needed. To do this, cut 12 1/2" wide strips on the fold. Depending on the width of your fabric, 2-3 strips will be needed.
  3. Trim off the selvages and piece the strips together, matching up the right sides along the 12 1/2" edge. Serge the pieces together, or use a long stitch length on a standard sewing machine.
  4. Make sure the strip is 120" long and fold in half lengthwise right sides together making the strip 120"x 6 1/4".
  5. Cut off a 4-5" triangle from the 2 edges of the strip. Be sure to not cut the folded edge, the triangle should be cut from the non-folded edges. This will create a nice tie shape on the ends of the carrier. This step can be skipped if desired.
  6. Starting from one end, serge or stitch all 3 sides using 1/4" seam allowance. Before or after the center, leave a 3" hole so the carrier can be flipped right side out. If using a straight stitch machine, use a longer stitch length and be sure to backstitch when starting and stopping.
  7. Flip the carrier right side out making sure the corners are pushed out nicely.
  8. Stitch the 3" opening closed using a long straight stitch.
  9. Press and iron the carrier to create smooth crisp edges.
  10. The baby doll carrier is now complete. It can be tied in many ways. To tie the most common way, follow these steps:
  11. Place the center of the strip flat along the child’s tummy. Wrap the ends around to the back, crossing them as they are brought over the shoulders. Wrapping should be snug but do not pull it tight. Now take both ends and push them through the center that is against the tummy. Cross the pieces again and wrap to the back. At this point a knot can be tied, or if too much tie is hanging, it can be wrapped around to the front and tied there as well.
  12. The baby doll will be placed against the child’s tummy. The pieces that are crossed will go in between the baby doll’s legs and cross over the body, and the flat part from the first step will now lay against the baby doll’s back or tummy.
